Iowa high school girls’ swimming regional assignments released

Gazette-area teams have been placed in three of the six girls’ swimming and diving regionals, released over the weekend by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Regional diving will be held Nov. 3 at three sites (Linn-Mar, Dubuque Hempstead and Johnston) beginning at 5 p.m. The swimming portion will be Nov. 5 beginning at noon.

The Linn-Mar region has the most area teams competing. The host Lions, ranked No. 10, will be joined by Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Cedar Rapids Washington, Tipton, Vinton-Shellsburg and Williamsburg. No. 4 Ames and Keokuk are the other schools in the field.

Fifth-ranked Iowa City West will compete in the Clinton regional, along with Cedar Rapids Jefferson. No. 8 Pleasant Valley is the next highest ranked team in the field.

Iowa City High and Decorah will be part of the Dubuque Hempstead regional. No. 7 Cedar Falls is the highest-ranked team in that field.

Top-ranked and defending state champion Waukee will host a meet at the Waukee YMCA. No. 2 West Des Moines Dowling will swim at Fort Dodge, while No. 3 Johnston, led by senior Olivia Swalley, will host a meet that also includes No. 6 Ankeny.

Swalley has met the state-qualifying standard in all eight individual events for the second consecutive year. The University of Iowa commit won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke state titles and was on two place-winning relays. A swimmer can only compete at state in events they swim at the regional meet.
