Tournament kicks off with 12 quarterfinal games

The 2022 Iowa high school boys’ state soccer tournament kicks off Wednesday with quarterfinal games in all three classes at Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines.

Class 1A boys’ state soccer quarterfinals
No. 4 West Liberty 3, No. 5 Nevada 2 (2OT)
Jahsiah Galvan’s penalty kick goal 22 seconds into the second overtime sent West Liberty to the state semifinals for the third straight season.
Galvan also scored West Liberty’s opener, but Nevada tied it twice late in each half. Drew Robinson’s penalty kick in the 75th minute sent it to OT. Joshua Zeman had given West Liberty a 2-1 lead with a breakaway goal.
No. 6 Davenport Assumption 2, No. 3 North Fayette Valley 1
Assumption, ranked first in the final coaches association rankings, rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to knock out NFV.
Owen Ekstrom tied it in the 52nd minute via a Billy Moore back-heel assist and Charlie Leinart scored the winner in the 64th.
Freshman Brody Schupbach made history for NFV with the program’s first state tournament goal in its second consecutive and overall appearance.
No. 2 Dyersville Beckman 2, No. 7 West Central Valley 1
Ryan Burchard dribbled around a defender and blasted in the go-ahead goal to send the Trailblazers to the semifinals.
A WCV own goal with 40 seconds left in the first half put Beckman in front, but the Wildcats tied it on Kamron Kunkle’s goal off the post early in the second half.

Class 2A boys’ state soccer quarterfinals
No. 5 Gilbert 1, No. 4 Marion 0 (OT)
Alex Ruba headed in a free-kick delivery from Evan Weary to send Gilbert (17-2) to the state semifinals with a golden goal with 1:41 left in the first overtime.
Marion (16-2) saw its season end with a 1-0 state quarterfinal loss for the second-straight season.

Class 3A boys’ state soccer quarterfinals
No. 6 Pleasant Valley 2, No. 3 Iowa City West 0
Pleasant Valley shut out West again in a rematch of last year’s championship game that the Spartans won 1-0 for their first state title.
It was 0-0 at halftime again here, with Justin Ancelet scoring the breakthrough after latching on to a ball over the top from Aidan Judd.
West had a shot at the equalizer with 13:04 left, but Michael Nelson’s penalty kick went over the bar. Just over five minutes later, Judd put the Spartans up two.
No. 7 Cedar Rapids Prairie 1, No. 2 Johnston 0 (5-4 PK)
Cedar Rapids Prairie won a penalty shootout in the sixth round, with Kayden McMaster converting the winning kick to give the Hawks their first state tournament win.
