City Hall to reopen in Iowa City this week

IOWA CITY — City Hall is expected to reopen to the public later this week.

According to a city news release, City Hall will reopen July 1. It closed to the public March 18, 2020, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, only the front lobby and police department have been open to the public.

With City Hall reopened, residents will be able to pay bills, purchase permits and conduct other city business in person. The Iowa City Council also is scheduled to return to in-person meetings July 6.

According to the news release, face masks will be encouraged but not required in City Hall. Free face masks will be available inside the building.

A drop box in the front lobby for utility payments and other documents will remain in place. The drive-thru utility payment drop-off on the east side of City Hall still is available, the city said.

Johnson County fully reopened county facilities — including the county administration building — on June 1. The county continues to offer remote services online and over the phone and email. Drop boxes for paperwork also remain in place.
