A new Dick’s House of Sport at the former Sears store at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids is on the road to becoming reality after it received initial approval from the city council this week.

The intended tenant of the former Sears store at Lindale Mall will be Dick’s House of Sport, and will include an outdoor year-round, multi-use field, according to documents set for discussion at Tuesday’s Cedar Rapids City Council meeting.

The identity of the retailer has not been disclosed. The name could be made public as soon as March, according to a spokesman for the developer.

The Cedar Rapids City Council on Tuesday will consider a resolution of support for city incentives to boost the redevelopment of the long closed Sears store at Lindale Mall. The store was closed in 2018.

A Dallas-based investment company, Reserve Development, has bought the former Sears property at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids. The purchase price and redevelopment plans have not yet been disclosed.

Lindale Mall, previously owned by Washington Prime Group, was sold in March for $28.5 million to a New York mall investor, Kohan Retail Investment Group. City leaders and some mall tenants are optimistic about the future, but Kohan has a history of legal troubles with its other properties.

Washington Prime Group’s chief executive officer said the bankruptcy allows the company to “right-size its balance sheet.”
