CEDAR RAPIDS — The Cedar Rapids Community School District has picked Grant Schultz as Washington High School's next athletic director. He has been the school's interim athletic director since August.
Before taking the interim post, he was the district's wellness and physical education facilitator.
'I feel honored to be selected as the next activities director at Washington High School,' Schultz said in a release. 'I look forward to continuing to work with our families and staff in support of student excellence.'
Schultz, 43, earned his bachelor's degree in physical education and his master's degree in education administration and evaluation from the University of Iowa. He also earned a master's degree in recreation and sports administration from Western Kentucky University.
His salary as athletic director is $ 115,053, according to district officials.
Schultz joined the Cedar Rapids Community School District in 1996 and has taught physical education at both the middle school and elementary levels. He has served as the district's physical education facilitator since 2009 and Wellness Council co-coordinator since 2012. Schultz has coached multiple sports, including football, boys' track, wrestling and tennis.
Schultz was named interim athletic director to fill a position left vacant by Michael Johnson, who resigned Aug. 9 in the midst of a district investigation into the handling of the Mary Beth Haglin case by Washington High School administrators.
Haglin, a former long-term substitute teacher at the school, was accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old Washington student while she worked at the school from January to May of 2016.
The district's investigation into the handling of the situation at Washington High also led to the departure of Ralph Plagman, who was principal at the school for 35 years.
Haglin has since been found guilty of sexual exploitation by a school employee, an aggravated misdemeanor, and is to be sentenced Friday in Linn County District Court.
