Designs for City High additions to be revealed at school board meeting

IOWA CITY - Details about and renderings of planned additions to City High in Iowa City are set to be revealed at an upcoming school board meeting.

The July 24 meeting will be the first time the public can view multiple mock-ups of the extensive renovation, district facilities director Duane Van Hemert said.

If the initial designs are approved by the board, construction is expected to begin next spring.

The July 24 meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at 1725 N. Dodge Street.

The district is working with BLDD Architects on the project.

Iowa City Community School District residents approved funding for updates to the 1939 school when they approved a $191.5 million bond in September.

During the bond campaign, documents budgeted work at City High at $30.4 million and projected work would be completed in winter 2021.

Bond campaign materials say the work is to include a cafeteria and kitchen expansion, accessibility improvements, a new roof, additional gym space and geothermal heating for the building.

The expansion of the high school is set to use space now occupied by Hoover Elementary at 2200 E. Court St., which the school board has decided to close - though the move remains controversial.

The July 24 meeting comes after two previous input sessions that were held at City High, according to the district.
