Area football capsules for Week 2:

Iowa City High at Pleasant Valley

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Bettendorf

Records and rankings — City High (1-0) is ranked 10th in Class 4A; Pleasant Valley (1-0) is No. 8.

Overview — Both teams were extremely impressive on both sides of the ball in one-sided openers. City High kept Linn-Mar out of the end zone all night in a 26-6 triumph. Quarterback Nate Wieland rushed for 118 yards, and Bryce Frantz added 105 yards on the ground. Pleasant Valley scored the first 31 points in a 31-7 conquest of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The Spartans racked up 351 rushing yards, led by Arthur Braden's 165.

Iowa City West at Muscatine

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Muscatine

Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0. Muscatine is ranked No. 4 in Class 4A.

Overview — After a 4-7 campaign in 2015, West started off the new season in fine fashion, handling Southeast Polk, 42-17. Oliver Martin caught a pair of touchdown passes, with eight receptions in all for 161 yards. The Trojans amassed 544 total yards — 271 on the ground, 273 through the air. Muscatine got 184 rushing yards from Alphonso Soko, plus an 84-yard go-ahead touchdown via punt return, in a 29-25 victory over then-No. 5 Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Cedar Rapids Kennedy at Cedar Rapids Washington

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Kingston Stadium (Washington is the home team, and its fans will sit on the west side)

Records and rankings — Kennedy (0-1) is ranked No. 9 in Class 4A; Washington (1-0) is No. 3.

Overview — Both of Washington's losses last year came to the hands of the Cougars, including one in the 4A state quarterfinals. Kennedy's 10-game regular-season winning streak ended last Thursday at the hands of Alphonso Soko and Muscatine, 29-25. The Cougars rallied from a 15-0 deficit with 25 straight points, but couldn't hang on. Washington was pushed hard by Cedar Rapids Prairie before pulling away, 27-14. Drew Dostal caught six passes for 113 yards.

Cedar Rapids Xavier at Linn-Mar

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Linn-Mar Stadium

Records and rankings — Xavier (1-0) is rated No. 2 in Class 3A. Linn-Mar is 0-1.

Overview — Linn-Mar is the first Metro 4A team to face Xavier in a non-district contest since the latter moved to the 3A ranks in 2014. The Saints took down 1A top-ranked Iowa City Regina, 35-26, last week behind a ground attack that churned out 381 yards on 47 carries. Maliki Wilson netted 291 yards on 24 carries, and his three touchdowns were all long runs. Linn-Mar didn't generate much offense in a 26-6 loss at Iowa City High, turning the ball over three times.

Solon at Iowa City Regina

Time and site — 7:30 p.m. Friday, at Regina

Records and rankings — Solon (1-0) is ranked No. 9 in Class 3A; Regina (0-1) is No. 1 in 1A.

Overview — After knocking off one No. 1 (2A's Mount Vernon) last week, Solon tries to replicate the feat. The Spartans held a 20-point lead on two occasions before hanging on and beating the Mustangs for the 14th straight time, 26-21. Regina will try to mend a normally stout defense that surrendered 381 rushing yards last week in a 35-26 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier. The Regals did show some big-play capablility, with Thomas Rapp hooking up with Isaac Vollstedt for two long TDs.

Benton Community at Marion

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Thomas Park Field

Records and rankings — Benton is 1-0; Marion is 0-1. Both are unranked.

Overview — Tim Lovell faces his first home game as Marion's head coach; the Indians dropped a 35-0 verdict to Union last week at LaPorte City, managing just 200 yards. Benton opened the season with an impressive 49-6 win over Oelwein. Spencer Touro rushed for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Cedar Rapids Jefferson at Cedar Rapids Prairie

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at John Wall Field

Records and rankings — Both teams are 0-1 and unranked.

Overview — Though 0-1, Prairie comes into the game with some optimism. The Hawks played No. 3 Cedar Rapids Washington tough before falling, 27-14, last week. Zachary Ganske ran for 72 yards. Jefferson suffered a 31-7 loss to Pleasant Valley. Joshua Furrow, Tavian Rashed and Myles Glassberg all reached double figures in tackles.

Dyersville Beckman at Western Dubuque

Time and site — 7:15 p.m. Friday, at Epworth

Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0. Beckman is ranked No. 8 in Class 2A.

Overview — Western Dubuque's defense was golden in Week 1, keeping Dubuque Wahlert out of the end zone in a 24-3 victory. Quarterback Dylan Gotto was extremely efficient, completing 20 of 24 passes (with an interception) for 252 yards and three touchdowns. Beckman is coming off a 28-14 victory over Clayton Ridge behind Luke Hageman's two rushing TDs.

Mount Vernon at West Delaware

Time and site — 7 p.m. Friday, at Manchester

Records and rankings — Mount Vernon (0-1) is rated No. 2 in Class 2A. West Delaware is 1-0.

Overview — Both teams are coming off varying results in rivalry games. West Delaware dominated all phases and hammered Independence, 48-0. Tanner Wessels passed for 251 yards and two touchdowns, and Caleb Kehrli ran for 180 yards and four scores. Mount Vernon couldn't make it all the way out of a 20-point deficit, and fell to Solon for the 14th straight time, 26-21. despite two TD passes from Drew Adams to Cale Snedden.

Mid-Prairie at Washington (Iowa)

Time and site — 7 p.m. Friday, at Washington

Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0. Mid-Prairie is No. 8 in Class 2A; Washington is No. 5 in 3A.

Overview — If your eyes weren't open on Washington before, a 42-0 blasting of Albia in the Demons' opener proved they are a 3A power. Junior QB Ryan Reighard accounted for 307 yards (11 of 13 passing, 120 yards; 14 rushes, 187 yards) and three touchdowns. Mid-Prairie also rolled, 41-8 over Louisa-Muscatine, behind a pair of touchdowns by Ricky Vargas.

Vinton-Shellsburg at Union

Time and site — 7:30 p.m. Friday, at LaPorte City

Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0. Union is rated No. 4 in Class 2A.

Overview — Twenty-eight teams in Iowa haven't allowed a point yet, and Union is one of them. The Knights blanked Marion, 35-0, last week, holding the Indians to 200 yards. Isaiah Vaughn rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Vinton-Shellsburg handled Center Point-Urbana, 33-15; Tanner Davis ran for 97 yards and two TDs.

Belle Plaine at Alburnett

Time and site — 7 p.m. Friday, at Alburnett

Records and rankings — Both teams are 1-0 and unranked.

Overview — Alburnett unveils its new football facility on the south end of town, and the debut features a pair of teams that won their openers. The Pirates won a defensive battle with North Cedar, 14-6, and Belle Plaine whipped North Mahaska, 38-6. Joey Schwenn ran for two touchdowns for the Plainsmen, and Garrett Straight passed for a pair.
