Girls
5A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Prairie 52, Linn-Mar 36
Prairie coach Josh Bentley knew his team had to defend well in Tuesday night's road test against a Linn-Mar team that loves to shoot the 3-point shot. And defend they did.
Prairie kept the pressure on Lion shooters most of the night and took advantage of a 12-0 run to start the second half en route to a 52-36 Mississippi Valley Conference win at Linn-Mar High School.
'I thought our defensive energy tonight was solid with our main 1-through-8 rotation,' Bentley said. 'The girls got into film study and really understood what they had to do and what we needed to do in our rotations. That was a big part of the game.'
Maquoketa Valley 58, East Buchanan 40
Sam Wall scored 25 points, and Maquoketa Valley's 2-3 zone befuddled East Buchanan early in a 58-40 Tri-Rivers Conference West Division girls' basketball triumph at East Buchanan High School.
The Wildcats (6-1 overall, 2-0 division) scored the first 10 points and held a double-digit lead most of the way. This isn't a team that resorts to zone often.
'We'd played it once all year,' Moenck said. 'We'd been fouling a lot, so we decided we needed to switch it up tonight.'
Cedar Rapids Kennedy 67, Waterloo East 51
The Kennedy Cougars won their first game of the season Tuesday night, beating Waterloo East in Cedar Rapids.
Kennedy (1-5) built a 40-22 halftime lead. Carlee Smith led the Cougars with 15 points. Laila Sain (12), Auddie Alepra (11) and Sadie Powell (10) also scored in double figures.
5A No. 5 Cedar Falls 61, Cedar Rapids Jefferson 36
The winless J-Hawks couldn't upset the fifth-ranked Tigers Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids.
Kayln Wise and Jenna Griffith each scored nine points for Jefferson (0-5, 0-2).
Emerson Green led Cedar Falls (6-0, 3-0) with 20 points.
4A No. 1 Marion 73, Vinton-Shellsburg 11
The top-ranked Indians got out to a 33-3 lead after one quarter and led 48-4 by halftime in Vinton.
Ella Van Weelden had 19 points for Marion (6-0).
4A No. 5 Cedar Rapids Xavier 60, Dubuque Hempstead 41
Caitlynn Daniels scored 18 points to help pace Xavier over Hempstead Tuesday night in Dubuque.
Emily Jasper added 13 points for Xavier (7-0).
5A No. 2 Iowa City High 74, Dubuque Wahlert 46
The Little Hawks clamped down defensively in the second half to beat the Golden Eagles Tuesday night in Dubuque.
Leading 35-31 at half, City (4-0, 3-0) won the second half 39-15. Aubrey Joens had 29 points and Rose Nkumu added 25 points for the Little Hawks.

Cedar Rapids Prairie 59, Linn-Mar 55
Much like its game this past Friday night against Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Prairie trailed much of the way, only to clutch up in clutch time. A 3-pointer by Trey Hutcheson to begin the fourth quarter moved Linn-Mar ahead by seven, 46-39.
But the Hawks pecked away at their deficit and finally went ahead for good, 51-49, with just under four minutes to go when Logan Burg put back his own drive miss, was fouled and sank the free throw. Still with a precarious four-point edge, Burg drove the lane again with 2:30 left, missed his initial shot but found a way to get a tip home in traffic.
Hutcheson had a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, though Prairie (2-1) seemed to lock down on him down the stretch.
Iowa City Liberty 61, Western Dubuque 59
Liberty picked up its first MVC victory Tuesday night despite being down 12 points going into the final quarter in Epworth.
Andre Brander scored 20 points, Ethan O'Donnell added 13 and Grayson Tyler had 12 for the Lightning (3-1, 1-1).
3A No. 9 Cedar Rapids Xavier 68, Dubuque Hempstead 57
The Saints won the fourth quarter 23-14 Tuesday night in Cedar Rapids.
Davis Wagner had 17 points for Xavier (3-1, 1-1).
