WINTHROP — Monday practice was bad.

“Worst one we’ve ever had,” Maquoketa Valley Coach Scot Moenck said. “I’m not joking.”

“We couldn’t do anything right,” added Sam Wall. “We were trying to mimic what East Buchanan was going to do, and we couldn’t figure it out.”

Tuesday was better. Lots better.

Wall scored 25 points, and Maquoketa Valley’s 2-3 zone befuddled East Buchanan early in a 58-40 Tri-Rivers Conference West Division girls’ basketball triumph at East Buchanan High School.

The Wildcats (6-1 overall, 2-0 division) scored the first 10 points and held a double-digit lead most of the way. This isn’t a team that resorts to zone often.

“We’d played it once all year,” Moenck said. “We’d been fouling a lot, so we decided we needed to switch it up tonight.”

Obviously, it was a success. East Buchanan (5-2, 1-1) missed 21 of its first 22 shots from the floor and finished at 22.8 percent (13 of 57).

“Maquoketa Valley brings a lot of pressure anyway, and our freshmen were scared to death,” Buccaneers Coach Nathan Reck said. “They grew up tonight.”

Maquoketa Valley built a 22-5 lead early in the second quarter, but Wall picked up her second foul, and the Bucs crept within 25-17 at halftime.

A Class 2A first-team all-stater last year, Wall returned and scored 18 points after intermission. The eight-point halftime lead grew to 18 late in the third quarter.

East Buchanan got within 45-37 early in the fourth, but managed just one field goal the rest of the way as the Wildcats pulled away for keeps.

Maddy Anderegg added eight points, Emerson Whittenbaugh seven. Four different players managed at least six rebounds in staking Maquoketa Valley to a 45-31 rebounding advantage.

Erica Hoffman was a bright spot — an extremely bright one — for East Buchanan, accumulating 25 points, 13 rebounds and four steals.
