EVANSTON, Ill. — You saw Josey Jewell leave late in the first half of the Illinois game with a shoulder injury. The senior linebacker said all of the right things about a return this week, but he wasn't able to make it back for today's Northwestern game.
Iowa radio play-by-play voice Gary Dolphin said during this morning's pregame that Jewell and junior safety Brandon Snyder will miss today's game. Iowa sports information said their absences are expected to be short term.
Dolph said Jewell's has full range of motion with his shoulder, but the contact would cause too many problems, so he's being held out.
HawkeyeReport.com reported Saturday morning that Snyder suffered a sprained MCL in practice this week. Of course, Snyder just returned from a torn ACL suffered in April. He played one game before the latest injury.
Senior Ben Niemann will switch from his outside linebacker spot to the middle. Senior Kevin Ward will replace Niemann. Junior Jake Gervase will replace Snyder in today's lineup.
Again, Jewell's injury is considered short term. Radio said the 'hope' is that Snyder's injury also is short term.
— Freshman safety Noah Clayberg made the trip.
— Punters Ryan Gersonde and Colten Rastetter made the trip. Assistant coach Seth Wallace spent a ton of time watching and coaching Gersonde in warmups.
— RB James Butler (elbow) also made the trip. He suffered the injury against North Texas and hasn't played since. Kirk Ferentz made it sound like he wasn't a go this week. We'll see. He's wearing a huge elbow brace.
— OL Boone Myers (ankle) is available today, but the plan is to sit him out for a second game.
— Cornerback Manny Rugamba (ankle/foot) is available today, but also likely won't play. Sophomore Michael Ojemudia will get the start.
