Iowa state baseball 2019: Friday's 1A quarterfinal scores

The 2019 Iowa high school baseball tournament began Friday with a pair of quarterfinal games in Class 1A at Principal Park in Des Moines.

CLASS 1A QUARTERFINALS
No. 6 Don Bosco 3, No. 9 Coon Rapids-Bayard 1
The Dons scored all of their runs in the third inning. Bryce Schares' single with the bases loaded brought home Easton Larson, then Fischer Ohrt followed with a single that scored Cael Frost and Kendall Becker. Ohrt and Becker were both 2-for-3.
Lewis Havel got the win, allowing seven hits and one earned run in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three. Schares earned the save with 1 1/3 hitless innings, giving up only a walk.
Aaron McAlister led off the top of the fourth with a triple and scored on Josh Ramirez's single for Coon Rapids-Bayard's lone run.
No. 1 Mason City Newman 8, Pekin 7
Pekin made the top-ranked, defending champion Knights sweat, as Kennan Winn cleared the bases in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI double to slice the lead to one.
Josh Fitzgerald then struck out Tugg Hill and Newman escaped with a one-run win.
The Knights jumped to a 7-0 lead, powered by a six-run third inning. The Panthers scored three in the fourth and got back within four, 8-4, in the fifth before nearly coming all the way back in the final frame.
