Cedar Rapids man identified as homicide victim

Shooting death is one of city's six homicides of 2017

CEDAR RAPIDS — Authorities have named a man found shot to death in an alley last week in Cedar Rapids.

Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said Leland J. Harris, 34, of Cedar Rapids, was found in the alley of the 500 block of 10th Street SW around 7:24 a.m. Nov. 22 when police were called there. Harris had been shot to death, Buelow said.

Buelow said no additional details are available in the homicide investigation.

According to an obituary, Harris was a graduate of Xavier High School. He loved “dancing, music, art and people,” his obituary states.

“There is no words to express the loss we feel for our son, brother, father, grandson, nephew and friend,” the obituary reads. “Leland, we love you and miss you today, tomorrow and forever.”

Harris’ death is one of six homicides in Cedar Rapids this year. There have been three this month, including two last week.
