Iowa City school board Director Tom Yates has resigned his position, according to a district news release.
Yates, 62, has been on the school board for seven months.
Before he was elected to the board, Yates taught language arts at City High School for 31 years and was the president of the Iowa City Education Association for 4 years.
Yates told The Gazette during his campaign that he found the school board 'dysfunctional” and closed off to the public.
According to the release, the board has not yet decided how it will fill Yates' position for the rest of his term, which ends in September 2019.
