Yagla named honorary captain for Ohio State dual

Chuck Yagla made a big contribution to the University of Iowa's wrestling tradition. He will serve another role this Friday.
Yagla, a Waterloo native and two-time NCAA champion for the Hawkeyes, was named the honorary captain for the dual between fifth-ranked Iowa and No. 4 Ohio State at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The dual is scheduled to start at 7:04 p.m.
Yagla won 150-pound NCAA and Big Ten titles in 1975 and 1976 for the Hawkeyes, and served as an assistant to Dan Gable on four Big Ten and NCAA championship teams from 1978-82. Yagla was also a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team, but the U.S. boycotted the games hosted in Moscow, Russia.
Yagla was 129-17-2 at Iowa and ranks 10th with 44 career pins. His 41 wins in his final season is tied for eighth in single-season victories at the school. He also went on to have a solid career as a wrestling official.

CHUCK YAGLA IS IOWA WRESTLING'S HONORARY CAPTAIN
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Former University of Iowa wrestling national champion Chuck Yagla will serve as honorary captain Friday when the Hawkeyes host Ohio State on Mediacom Mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Yagla, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, won the 150-pound NCAA championship in 1975 and 1976. His first individual title helped Iowa capture its first of 23 NCAA championships. The Hawkeyes defended the crown in 1976 when Yagla was named Iowa's first Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA Championships. He is one of 10 Hawkeyes to earn the honor.
Yagla owned a career record of 129-17-2 before graduating in 1976. He won the Big Ten title in his final two years of competition and, after college, was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. He helped Iowa captured four NCAA and four Big Ten championships as a member of Dan Gable's coaching staff at Iowa from 1978-82.
His 44 career pins rank 10th in school history, and his 41 wins during the 1975-76 season tie for eighth most in a single season.
Yagla will be recognized prior to the start of the dual meet. Start time is 7:04 p.m. (CT).
