Wrestler arrested for OWI

Jan. 12, 2011 1:31 pm
University of Iowa red-shirt freshman wrestler Michael Evans was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, a serious misdemeanor, early Sunday morning in Iowa City.
The 19-year-old, of N203 Hillcrest Hall in Iowa City, was arrested at 4:54 a.m.
Police reports state that officers received a call about three males damaging a bicycle outside of Hillcrest around 1:47 a.m. The report states that after the investigation officers discovered the males left in a white van. Although it doesn't say why, officers suspected the van would return around 5 a.m. When Evans pulled up at 4:54 a.m., dropping off other people, officers approached the van. According to documents filed in Iowa District Court of Johnson County, Evans admitted drinking alcohol, had slurred speech and bloodshot/watery eyes and detected the smell of alcohol. Evans registered a .084 and .097 blood-alcohol level on tests.
Evans, of Enola, Pa., who wrestled at Blair Academy (N.J.), was 165-8 as a prep, going 52-0 as a senior. Evans was a three-time Pennsylvania state freestyle and Greco-Roman champion. He was a four-time Junior Nationals All-American in Fargo, N.D., and was selected to the Asics All-America team as a senior.
