West Delaware punches ticket to State Duals

Feb. 8, 2012 12:38 am
MANCHESTER - Sometimes scoreboards can be deceiving.
Sure, second-ranked West Delaware won by a comfortable margin, but the victory was far from easy.
The Hawks seniors captured their first Class 2A regional dual title, overcoming a scrappy Wilton for a 51-22 win Tuesday night at West Delaware. The win advanced West Delaware to the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Duals tournament for the first time since 2008.
“Wilton has a good team,” West Delaware Jeff Voss said. “It's a team win, Some kids didn't wrestle as well as they have been. Other kids came through for us. That's what it takes to win a dual.”
The Hawks has had this as a goal all season long and were pumped once it was accomplished.
“I'm pretty excited about it,” senior 145-pounder Brent Reilly said. “We've had the chance to do it the past couple years but this year I'm excited about learning the experience and bonding with the teammates a little bit more.”
Reilly had one of eight West Delaware falls, scoring a pin to help back down the Beavers, who battled in almost every match. After the Hawks soared to a 21-0 lead powered by falls from top-ranked Adam Reth (195), Spencer Oberbroeckling (220) and heavyweight Dean Broghammer, Wilton won four of the next five weights, pulling within eight and five matches left.
“It was pretty close,” Reilly said, “We had a couple hammers in the lineup yet so we weren't worried about it.”
Reilly provided his own blow, breaking open a 2-2 match with a takedown and immediately turning Richard Janney for a pin in 3:36, It gave West Delaware a convincing 33-19 lead.
Reilly felt Janney tire after the first and broke him after his final score, using conditioning to wear down his foe.
“That's what we rely on,” Reilly said. “Wearing our opponents down and hopefully scoring some bonus points at the end of the match.”
West Delaware (21-4) scored plenty of bonus points, capping the dual with three straight falls from Nolan Zumbach (160), Sam Lahr (170) and Jacyn Goebel (182).
Now they can focus on trying to claim a state title.
“This is the first step,” Voss said. “We had to get over this hurdle first and now we can concentrate on the rest of it.”
Wilton finished with only one less match point than West Delaware. The Beavers were competitive but needed to overturn a few more results.
“We knew they're a very quality team, and we had to have everything go our way,” Wilton Coach Nick Dohrmann said. “It just didn't happen that way tonight.
“Our kids fought well.”
Wilton advanced with a thrilling 37-33 win over Crestwood (11-12) to reach the regional dual final, scoring a pin in the last match of the dual.
West Delaware handled Solon, 62-14, in the semifinals. The Spartans (20-4) ended a successful dual campaign with a school record in wins.
“It's a phenomenal season,” Solon Coach Brooks McLaren said. “The kids have improved immensely.”
The State Duals tournament is Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
