UNI wrestling opens WWC competition

The University of Northern Iowa begins Western Wrestling Conference action this weekend, wrestling at North Dakota State on Friday 7:30 p.m. The Panthers then head to South Dakota State for a dual Saturday at 7 p.m.

UNI is 5-7 and is coming off a 1-2 performance at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals at the UNI-Dome last weekend. The win was a 20-19 victory over No. 24 Ohio State. It was the Panthers' first win against a ranked opponent since beating 21st-ranked Old Dominion, 25-15, in Dec. 2008.

The Panthers are 16-2 in the WWC the last four seasons, winning titles their first three years in the conference before Wyoming claimed the regular-season title last year. This will be the first WWC competition for first-year UNI head coach Doug Schwab.
