Midlands Championships Results: Session III

The semifinals and consolation matches will be wrestled beginning at noon. Lehigh is leading the team race with 65 points, Wisconsin is second with 58.5 and Iowa is third with 52.5. Lehigh and Wisconsin have four in the semifinals and Iowa has three. Iowa has more in the consolation brackets with four, while Lehigh and Wisconsin have one and three respectively.
Hawkeyes need to wrestle a lot better with more toughness today than yesterday. They'll also need a little help.

Tyler Clark beats UNI's Ryan Jauch in a 133-pound consolation, 3-1. Clark is in the top 8. Nebraska's Ridge Kiley, a state champion at Eagle Grove who wrestled at Iowa City West as well, won by DQ before stepping on the mat and moves into the top 8 at 133.
At 141, Mark Ballweg advanced into the top 8 with an 8-1 win over Maryland's Jon Kohler.
Nate Carr Jr. will be coming up soon in a consolation match against central Michigan's Donnie Corby. Corby gets opening T2 and leads 2-0. Corby wins, 8-0, and Carr is eliminated.
At 157, David Bonin is in a scoreless bout with Sean McMurray. Bonin rode McMurray for the whole second period. McMurrfay returns the favor and they go into OT tied 0-0. Bonin with reversal in first 30-second tiebreaker.
At 165, Aaron Janssen is in a wild match with Cal Poly's #7 seed Ryan DesRoches. Janssen leads 11-7 with a minute left in the second. Janssen goes on to win 13-8 and lock in a top-8 placing.
Michael Moreno, wrestling unattached for ISU, is up against American's Bubby Graham in a 165-pound consolation. Moreno down 3-1 in the second period after Graham had a T2 in the first and E1 in second. Moreno with a T2 to tie the score 3-3 to start the third, which Moreno will start in the down position. Missed the end, but looks like Graham won 9-4. Moreno eliminated.
Tyler Caldwell of Oklahoma leads Brandon hatchett of Lehigh in a 165-pound consolation, 2-0, to start third period. Lehigh already has one consolation win, so Iowa could use some help from the Sooner. Caldwell wins 2-0. Lehigh wrestler eliminated. Now the Hawks could use some more help from the Stanford 184-pounder. No such luck as the Lehigh kid wins. Lehigh as another top-8 placer, going 2-1 in their consi matches.
Ethen Lofthouse and Mike Evans have started their consolation bout at 174. Lofthouse is a point scorer while Evans is wrestling unattached. Lofthouse with a takedown and leads 2-1 with 1:15 to go in second. Lofthouse with another T2 and leads 4-2 at the end of the second. Lofthouse wins 5-3 and moves into top 8 at 174.
Dan Rinaldi of Rutgers is leading UNI's Ryan Loder 4-3 after the first period of a 184-pound consolation. Loder E1 in second ties it 4-4. Loder scores a T2, coming out on top of a scramble with 3 seconds to go, and then gets a quick NF2 for an 8-4 win.
Three consi matches left before semifinals. Luke Lofthouse of Iowa at 197, Christian Brantley of UNI and Wartburg's John Helgerson at heavyweight.
Luke Lofthouse beating Alex Polizzi of Northwestern 8-4 in third. Lofthouse has RT and is trying to get bonus pts. Not sure it will happen. Lofthouse wins, 11-4.
Christian Brantley wins his consolation bout, giving UNI three medalists.
helgerson edges ISU's matt Gibson, 4-3, to move into top 8 at heavyweight. Wartburg has two medalists.
SEMIFINALS STARTING NOW
Matt McDonough (Iowa) vs. Ryan Mango of Stanford
Scoreless first period. McDonough was in deep once, but scramble resulted in a stalemate.
Mango starts down and McDonough ends up getting a turk to put Mango on his back for NF3. McD earns a penalty point to lead 4-0 after second.
McD with E1 for 5-0 lead early third. McD with another T2 and a 7-0 lead with RT locked up already. 1:08 to go. McDonough wins, 10-1. He'll face Brandon Precin who beat Pitt's Anthony Zanetta, 6-0.
Tony Ramos (Iowa) vs. B.J. Futrell (Illinois)
Futrell opens scoring with T2 and rides for 33 seconds before Ramos gets E1. 2-1 Futrell in 1st. Futrell with another T2 to go up 4-1 in first. Futrell leads 4-1 with 1:16 of RT after first.
Ramos with E1 in second. 4-2 Futrell. Ramos in deep on shot at end of second but time runs out. 4-2 Futrell, who has 1:25 of RT.
Futrell E1 and leads 5-2 with 1:40 to go. Futrell with stalling 1:30 to go. Futrell with T2 and leads 7-2. Ramos E1 and a T2 to make it 7-5. Futrell E1 and then he hit for stalling. 8-6 with 20 secs left. Futrell back pedals the last 30 seconds and holds on for 9-6 win.
Illinois' Jimmy Kennedy tops ISU's Chris Drouin in 141-pound semifinal.
Tyler Clark beats Oklahoma's Jordan Keller, 2-1, to move into top 6 at 133.
Mark Ballweg with a good win over Nick Dardanes (unattached-Minnesota). Ballweg advances to top-six finish with 9-4 victory.
David Bonin of UNI with a 10-2 win to move into top 6 at 157 pounds.
Aaron Janssen moves into top six at 165 with 9-3 win over Pitt's Ethan Headlee. He face's Mizzou's Zach Toal, who beat Janssen, 7-3, earlier in the tournament.
ISU's Chris Spangler receives cut under eye, trailing 8-3, and injury defaults to Nebraska's Jordan Burroughs.

Jon Reader moves into 174-pound finals for ISU.
Ethen Lofthouse scores an 11-2 major dec. over Mizzou's pat Wright. Helps in the team score, distancing Hawks a tad from Tigers thanks to the major, advancement and placement points.
Gambrall and Ihnen up. The two exachnge E1 and go to OT 1-1.
Sudden victory is scoreless. GG E1 in first 30-second tiebreaker. GG gets called for locked hands and then gives up R2 in last 8 sedconds and Ihnen wins, 4-2.
Ryan Loder beats Kadeem Samuels of Lehigh to move into top 6 at 184.
Wartburg's Byron Tate beats Nathan Patrick of the Sunkist Kids WC, 9-6, to reach 197-pound finals. Tate faces Matt Wilps, Unattached-Pittsburgh, in the finals. Wilps beat Lehigh's 3rd-seed Joe Kennedy by a major decision.
Luke Lofthouse wrestling top-seeded Zac Thomusseit. the winner wrestles for a chance to go for 3/4 and 5/6. Loser wrestles again for 7/8. Thomusseit with an E1 in second and a T2 in third to go up, 3-0. Thomusseit wins, 3-1.
Wartburg's John Helgerson defeated UNI's Christian Brantley, 3-1. Helgerson will move into top 6. Brantley goes for 7th/8th.
