MOUNT VERNON - How about some wrestling to wash down those turkey leftovers? Cornell is hosting the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and the three-time defending national champions University of Iowa Hawkeyes.
The schedule of events goes UTC vs. Cornell, which is starting now. Then UTC vs. Iowa at about 6:30 p.m. and the Cornell vs. Iowa at 8 p.m. will conclude the evening.
It will be an interesting night.
The connections between the coaching staffs are numerous. Iowa Coaches Tom and Terry Brands go back a ways with Cornell Coach Mike Duroe. UTC assistant Mike Hatcher was a former Hawkeye wrestler and familiar with the Brands. Terry Brands was the head coach for UTC from 2002-05, and current UTC head coach Heath Eslinger was one of his assistants for two years.
By the way, UTC has their own version of "Green man" from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He's dressed in a blue lycra (I'm guessing) body suit, with a UTC singlet and a yellow bow tie under a black suit coat and pants and wrestling shoes.
After 133, UTC up 6-3. Mocs with fall at 125 and Michael Buhr wins 6-1 decision at 133. UTC up, 9-3, with decision at 141. UTC with decision at 149. Dan Waddell scores a takedown in OT to beat Cornell's Loughlin, 3-1. UTC wins at 165 and 174 to go up, 22-3. A major at 184, puts UTC up 26-3 with two weights left.
We should be near capacity, which is 1,600-ish at the Small Multi-Sports Center. There hasn't been this many people in Cornell's gym since the Helsinki iIncident in 1919. Effing A, Cotton! Effing A!
UTC with a fall at 197 and leads 32-3 with Hwt. left. UTC finishes with a decision and wins, 35-3. UTC and Iowa coming up next.
McD vs. Prescott Garner at 125. MCD with T2 in opening minute and rides him out. 2-0 with 2:10 RT after first.
McD adds a Reversal and leads 4-0. RT could reach a week.
Garner is riding McD hard. McD flat on his belly. McD hit with stalling. Something I'd never thought I'd see.
McD gets E1 and wins 7-1. Iowa up 3-0 after 125.
At 133, nate Moore vs. Cody Hood. Moore with two nice T2 early and leads 4-2 with a minute left in first. Moore leads 4-2 after one. Hood starts down for second. Moore with his third T2 and leads 6-3. Hood with e1, but Moore adds an E1 in third to go up 7-4.
Moore adds T2 with 40 secs to go in third and has 9-4 lead. Moore wins 9-5 and Iowa leads 6-0 after two.
At 141, Mark ballweg vs. Shawn Greevy. Ballweg opens with T2 and gets the crowd going with back points. Ballweg up, 5-0. Ballweg scores another NF3 and leads 8-0 in first.
Ballweg ends first with 8-0 lead and 2:48 riding time.
Ballweg scores a takedown after Greevy chooses neutral. 10-0 lead now. Ballweg turns him with deep half sunk in. Fall in 4:42 and Iowa leads 12-0.
At 149, Jeret Chiri vs. Dean Pavlou. Pavlou ranked by some wrestling organizations.
Pavlou comes out with two takedowns. Chiri with two escapes and gets his own takedown, catching Pavlou in a reverse cradle for NF. and leads 7-4 at end of one.
They go neutral. Pavlou gets a standing cradle, goes to turn Chiri, who rolls through and catches Pavlou on his back and the crowd goes nuts when Chiri gets pin in 3:47. Iowa up 18-0.
BTW, carew is in a new brace in street clothes, sitting on the Iowa bench. Word is he has torn ligaments and likely out a long time (Maybe the season).
At 157, Derek St. John vs. Josh Condon. St. John scores two T2 in first and leads 4-1 after first three minutes.
St. John gets E1 to start second and leads, 5-1. St. John with a third T2 and leads 7-1 after two.
St. John exchanges an E1 for T2 and leads, 9-2. St. John turns Condon for NF3 and leads 12-2. St. John won't give up a garabage E1 at the end, which is a good sign of his desire to not give anything up. He wins, 13-2, with more than 4 minutes of riding time.
At 165, Jake Kerr vs. Brandon Wright. Kerr takes Wright down to his back and gets pin in 2:19. Iowa leads, 28-0.
At 174, Ethen Lofthouse vs. Levi Clemons. Lofthouse gets a T2 and then turns him with a cradle. Lofthouse with the fall in 52 seconds. If you blinked you missed the match.
At 184, Grant Gambrall vs. Jason McCroskey, who is ranked by all major wrestling publications.
Gambrall with some nice scrambling on edge of mat to fight off a possible takedown and ends the period scoreless. Gambrall starts down for second.
Weird happening as some hip-hop music plays in between periods.
Gambrall with E1 to go up 1-0 in second.
Another scramble, but this time at the end of the second and this time McCroskey holding off a T2. Period ends with gambrall up, 1-0, with McCroskey going down to start third.
Cornell SID Kerry Kahl pointed out the fact that there is a lot of action for no scoring. Shortly after, gambrall gets NF2, catching McCroskey on his back. He's got RT as well. Gambrall up, 3-0, but 4-0 with RT. 20 seconds to go.
gambrall wins, 4-0. Iowa up, 37-0.
At 197, Luke Lofthouse vs. Robert Prigmore. Lofthouse out to 6-2 lead with three T2.
Lofthouse dominates Prigmore, scoring nine T2 for a 21-8 win. Iowa up, 41-0.
At Hwt., Blake Rasing vs. Matt Lettner. Rasing with a T2 and horses Lettner over for a pin in 1:05. Iowa wins, 47-0.
Iowa has won its first 30 matches in dual competition this season. Hawkeyes outscored UTC, 77-20, in match points. Sixteen of UTC's points were escapes. Pavlou scored the Mocs only two takedowns (Official results have the T2 differential at 24-3, so I could be wrong) but that didn't end so well, as he trailed Chiri, 7-4, after the first and eventually was pinned in the second. Hawkeyes had 25 takedowns and 14 nearfall points. Iowa also had four RT points. Good considering the Hawks had five pins. I think Nate Moore was 2 seconds shy of RT.
The attendance for the triangular is 1,475. Great turn out.
Just a heads up, Tony Ramos is going at 133 for Iowa against Cornell.
Up now, Matt McDonough vs. Tim Hood.
McD builds, 9-2 lead with 1:43 RT in first. McD with R2, T2 and NF3 for 16-3 advantage after two. Enough riding time to last to Midlands. A third-period R2 ends the match - a 19-3 technical fall for McD. Iowa leads, 5-0.
At 133, Tony Ramos vs. Tigue Snider. Ramos has three T2 and leads, 6-2, after first. Ramos builds big lead and wins 14-5 behind six T2. Iowa up, 9-0.
At 141, mark Ballweg vs. Kevin Donahue, who is a two-time All-American.
Ballweg racks up 14 first-period points, turning Donahue four times for 12 nearfall points. Ballweg escapes to start second for 16-0 tech fall. Iowa up, 14-0.
at 149, Chiri vs. Schwebke. Chiri with T2 and then cinches up a cradle for NF 3. TA the end of 1, Chiri up, 5-1.
Chiri wins, 9-4. Iowa leads, 17-0.
At 157, Derek St. John vs. Nicholas Loughlin.
Scoreless first period. St. John takes 1-0 lead with a second-period escape.
St. John leads 1-0 after two and starts third on top. Brands looks like he pounds his stomach. Either telling St. John to have guts or a deep waist.
Loughlin E1 to tie it. A little more than a minute left. St. John gets T2 with a little more than 30 seconds left, gets RT before Loughlin E1. St. John wins, 4-2. Iowa leads, 20-0.
At 165, Aaron Janssen vs. Joe Hambleton. Janssen with a T2 for first-period lead.
janssen wins, 14-5, scoring five T2 and a R2. Iowa leads, 24-0.
At 174, Ethen Lofthouse vs. Derek Munsey, Lofthouse doesn't even need 30 seconds for a T2, taking early lead. Lofthouse with five takes in first 2 minutes. He adds another and leads 12-5 at end of first.
If there was ever an amateur wrestling video game, this match might be one of the lopsided games you would play to get gaudy stats. Lofthouse trouncing Munsey with 10 T2.
Lofthouse wins by 25-9 tech fall. Iowa up, 28-0.
At 184, Grant Gambrall vs. Andrew Roberts. Roberts fights off takedown attempt and ends up in body lock with Gambrall. Wrong move with Grant, who gets body lock and takes Roberts to his back for 5-pt move and early 5-0 lead.
gambrall puts on takedown clinic as well, winning 22-7. Luke Lofthouse follows with a first-period pin at 197 over Robert Widmer, putting Iowa up 39-0.
At Hwt., Blake Rasing vs. Wyatt Bauman. Rasing scores five in the first and adds an E1 and T2 in second for an 8-0 lead.
rasing wins, 11-1, and Iowa wins 43-0.
UTC has its own version of the 'Green man' sports mascot from the sitcom 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.' He's at Cornell College in Mount Vernon for the triangular between the Cornell, UTC and University of Iowa wrestling programs. (K.J. Pilcher/SourceMedia Group news)
