Lights go out during NCAA wrestling championships

Mar. 22, 2013 5:40 pm
DES MOINES - During the semifinal round Friday night at the NCAA wrestling championships, the lights at Wells Fargo Arena noticeably dimmed. While the wrestlers seemed to barely notice, the dimming made for a different atmosphere, as seen in the photo above. Here's the statement from those in charge of the power:
From Global Spectrum Operations:
Safety is our number-one priority for the student-athletes and fans. We are in communication with Mid-American Energy to determine the cause. We know that it was not isolated to Wells Fargo Arena.
At 8:04 p.m. we had a split-second sag in our power, which affected the high intensity sport lighting. This lighting requires a cool down and warm up period. A portion of our sports lighting is fed off of a different line that was not affected by the sag allowing us to continue with the competition. At that point, it was determined that there were no safety concerns that would affect the attendees or the wrestlers.
Until we have additional information from Mid-American Energy we will not be answering additional questions at this time.
Wrestlebacks and semifinals continue at Wells Fargo Arena after most of the lights go out during the 2013 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Des Moines on Friday, March 22, 2013. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette-KCRG TV9)
