Class 3A quarterfinals: 2-time champ Hunter Garvin among area winners
Friday morning served as a time frame for winning, not talking.
“Not until Saturday,” Iowa City West’s top-seeded 152-pounder Hunter Garvin said after he won his Class 3A state wrestling tournament quarterfinal bout by major decision.
Garvin — a two-time state champion — improved to 46-0 this season and hasn’t lost a match since his freshman season.
So the Stanford-bound senior’s resume speaks for itself, but several other area wrestlers also advanced to the semifinals in every way imaginable.
Brayden Parke of Linn-Mar stayed on the offensive to gut out a 4-3 decision at 126 pounds over Bettendorf’s Jayce Luna. Parke, ranked No. 4 at his weight by IAwrestle.com, had chosen a different tack in the previous meeting with the third-ranked Luna at December’s Dan Gable Donnybrook, and fell late, 5-1.
Lesson learned, Parke said.
“I think I stayed more active in the third,” said Parke, who became a first-time state medalist. “My last match with him I got really defensive in the third and that’s where he was able to score off me at the end.”
Not Friday. Parke scored the only takedown of the match to enjoy a measure of redemption.
“It means a lot,” said Parke, who clinched his first podium finish. “Especially that match. That was a revenge match.”
Parke’s teammates Kane and Tate Naaktgeboren both reached the semifinals at 132 and 170, respectively.
Iowa City High also advanced three wrestlers to the semifinals, led by two-time champion and top-seeded 220-pounder Ben Kueter, who won by technical fall in the quarters.
Two Little Hawks teammates — Cale Seaton (120) and Kael Kurtz (126) — also earned berths in the semifinals in dominating fashion.
Seaton, who placed third at 113 last season, won by technical fall over West Des Moines Valley’s Nate Bierma. Kurtz, who took seventh last year at 103, won by major decision over Benjamin Hansen of Ankeny — a wrestler he’d narrowly lost to earlier this season.
“It kind of drove him,” City High head coach Cory Connell said. “It made him focused a little bit more on some things you need to get better at.”
Kueter, who boasts a 70-0 high school record, used his quarterfinal match against Urbandale’s hard-nosed Colton Teem to tune-up his technique.
“I kind of could tell he didn’t know too much technical stuff, but he was pretty strong,” Kueter said. “So wrestling kids like that, I just really work on technique and make sure everything’s right.”
Nothing’s wrong with Cedar Rapids Prairie’s top-seeded and unbeaten Blake Gioimo, who won by major decision at 113 to advance to the semifinals. Iowa City West’s Robert Avila Jr. (145) and Western Dubuque’s Greyson Gardner (182) also punched their tickets to the semis. Avila outlasted Linn-Mar’s Grant Kress, 7-5, and Gardner pinned his opponent to ensure his first career podium finish.
Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Christian Stanek won by decision in the quarterfinals to become the Saints’ first four-time state medalist. He finished eighth as a freshman at 132, sixth at 138 as a sophomore and third at 145 last season.
“It means a lot,” said Stanek, an Iowa State signee. “I’ve thought about it ever since freshman year when I was the first freshman. Obviously, my goal is to win (a state title), but that didn’t happen my sophomore or junior year. Just making it four times on the podium is a lot to be proud of. I’m pretty happy for that.”

Class 1A quarterfinals: Quincy Happel adds to family legacy
Welcome to Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena, Quincy Happel.
The Lisbon senior finally gets to join his older brothers and dad by taking a step on the awards stand. A prize that eluded him the last three seasons.
Happel scored two takedowns and a reversal to get his hand raised and earn a top-six finish at the Class 1A state wrestling tournament Friday. He was one of five semifinalists for Lisbon, which was in second and trailed Don Bosco, 78.5-60, after the quarterfinals.
Happel’s older brothers, Carter and Cael, were four-time champions at Lisbon. His dad, Dean, was a three-timer. The younger Happel qualified each season, but was one victory shy of placing the first three.
“It’s huge,” Happel said. “Everybody knows the story. Both of my brothers are four-time state champs. I haven’t been on the podium in high school, so it’s super sweet to get it done my senior year. It means a lot.”
Happel used takedowns in the first two periods and added a reversal in the third to drop North Butler-Clarksville’s Tanner Arjes, 6-4, at 126 pounds. He was greeted behind the scorer’s table after his victory by Dean, an assistant coach for the Lions. The two hugged and had a short conversation before Quincy exited the arena floor. Dean congratulated him and expressed his pride on making the final day in his final tournament.
“He just said ‘you finally did it,’” Happel said. “He told me before that match it might come down to the last second or overtime. I knew that I was better than him. He knew that. I had to do what it takes to win that dogfight.
“It felt amazing. I haven’t stepped on that mat on Saturday one time. I’m looking forward to that, really.”
Happel’s win came in the midst of a Lisbon quarterfinal rush. State champion and two-time state finalist Brandon Paez opened the run with a 1:04 fall over Earlham’s Payton Harger at 120. Returning state champion Cade Siebrecht scored a takedown with 32 seconds left to beat Quinten Aney of Mediapolis, 3-1, at 138.
Lincoln Holub (152) and Max Kohl (170) moved into the top six as well. Holub rolled Council Bluffs St. Albert’s David Helton, 9-2, in the quarterfinals. Kohl outlasted North Tama’s Aiden Zook, 6-5, to advance.
Tiernan Boots (132), Jamien Moore (182) and heavyweight Wyatt Smith each won consolation matches to give the Lions eight medalists.
“That was a good performance,” Lisbon Coach Brad Smith said. “We’re in a hunt for a trophy, for sure. Don Bosco will be hard to catch but who knows.”
Cascade freshman Brock Morris watched the Cougars’ Aidan Noonan make school history, winning three state titles. Now, Morris has accomplished something Noonan did not, qualifying and earning a medal as a freshman.
“It’s great,” Morris said. “Aidan didn’t get as good of a chance, I guess. He had a tough bracket. It’s awesome.”
Morris is stepping in and attempting to pick up where Noonan left off a year ago. He looked comfortable and relaxed, controlling his nerves. Morris built a 5-0 lead after one, taking North Tama’s Case Monat down and turning him for a fall in 3:26 at 113. The third-ranked 113-pounder has had his sights set on this feat all season.
“It’s been an expectation since the start of the season,” Morris said. “I was working my butt off all summer. I wouldn’t expect anything less than to be on the podium.”
Morris reached his first semifinal, while Dyersville Beckman’s Owen Huehnergarth notched a second straight semifinal appearance and top-six finish.
Huehnergarth dropped Iowa City Regina’s Ronan Poynton, 8-3, at 195.
“I thought I left it a little bit short last year,” Huehnergarth said. “This year, I’m going for it all.”
Huehnergarth, who placed fifth a year ago, trailed by three late in the second when he produced a flurry for an escape, takedown and three nearfall points in a matter of 12 seconds.
“Some kids want to quit that last 10 seconds and we’re always taught in the room to take it to them the last 10 seconds, so I can have any advantage you can,” said Huehnergarth, who is an all-state football and baseball player. “I thought that was huge in the match.”
Alburnett’s Brody Neighbor has thrashed the rankings through his first two rounds. He came in ranked 12th, but knocked off No. 4 and No. 5-ranked foes to reach the semifinals and the podium. Neighbor used a takedown in the first and a second-period reversal to drop Denver’s fifth-ranked Joe Ebaugh, 4-2, in the 132 quarterfinals.
Midland’s Cayden Miller (46-0) reached the semifinals unbeaten. The second-ranked senior needed just 1:12 to deck North Butler-Clarksville’s Kolben Miller at 195. Cayden Miller was fifth at 182 as a junior.
East Buchanan and MFL MarMac each advanced a second-seeded wrestler into the semifinals.
Buccaneers heavyweight Cody Fox scored a penalty point to break a 1-1 tie in the third and added a takedown as time expired for a 4-1 decision over Don Bosco’s Mack Ortner in the quarterfinals.
The Bulldogs’ Gabe McGeough grabbed his third straight top-six finish. He racked up six takedowns in a 12-5 triumph over Carroll Kuemper’s Shea Parkis to advance at 152.
