Hunting probe includes Iowa assistant coach

Nov. 17, 2010 3:52 pm
It appears Iowa assistant coach Mike Zadick is currently being investigated for illegal hunting.
Zadick, an avid outdoorsman, had buildings at his home searched and animal hides and hunting equipment was confiscated by Iowa conservation officers on Nov. 10. Zadick is an interim assistant coach this season. He was a three-time All-American for the Hawkeyes from 2000-02. He was a 2008 Olympian and earned a silver medal in the 2006 World Championships and was a U.S. World Team member this September.
The search was conducted when Department of Natural Resources conservation officer Erika Billerbeck went to Zadick's residence to discuss a separate case, involving University of Iowa freshman wrestler Josh Dziewa, who was questioned about the possession of raccoon carcasses discovered the Hillcrest dorm. An affidavit filed in Johnson County court said Dziewa admitted to transporting the carcasses and hunting a second time on Nov. 6, which is the start to the season, but according to the affidavit Dziewa does not possess the proper license.
Due to association, Zadick was called on by Billerbeck the following day. When Zadick did not answer, Billerbeck "proceeded to try to locate him on his property." That's when she discovered a hoist and tarp that appeared to be covered in blood in a building on the property. She also found blood and deer hair in a truck registered to Zadick that was on the property.
It appears no charges have been filed at this time.
At thegazette.com, an Associated Press storythat included a comment from Iowa associate athletic director Fred Mims, saying the university is aware “that something was going on.” Mims declined further comment.
