Big guys provide a big swing, and Mount Vernon reaches the state wrestling duals
Mustangs win the last 5 bouts and pull away from Davenport Assumption, 42-21

MOUNT VERNON — The message to Trystin Lashley was pretty simple:
Just be you.
“The coaches said, ‘We don’t need anything big. We don’t need anything wild. We don’t need a miracle,’” Lashley said.
Lashley’s pin at 285 pounds was a key point in a late tidal wave. Fourth-ranked Mount Vernon won the last five matches, including an eight-point swing at 195, and topped No. 11 Davenport Assumption, 42-21, in a regional-final boys’ dual wrestling match Tuesday night at Mount Vernon High School.
“We were down five points going to 195, but I thought we were favored in all five of them,” Mustangs Coach Vance Light said. “I felt pretty good about our chances.”
Mount Vernon (23-3) advances to the state duals Saturday at Xtream Arena, Coralville. The Mustangs will be making their sixth state appearance, their first since 2005. They won a state championship in 1988.
The big guys were a big deal for the Mustangs. The match swung at 195.
Assumption (17-11) led the match 24-16 heading into 195. Mount Vernon’s Ethan Wood led Assumption’s Joe Gassen, 3-0, and was riding Gassen when the whistle blew.
Gassen was disqualified, apparently for a head-butt, and the Knights were deducted three points for flagrant misconduct. Wood was awarded the win, but the Mustangs were deducted a point for unsportsmanlike conduct.
After it was all sorted out, the match was tied 21-21 with four bouts to go.
“I was kind of in my zone when it happened,” said Lashley, who sang the national anthem before Tuesday’s event. “I had to walk up to my buds and ask what was going on.”
Clark Younggreen followed with a win by decision to give the Mustangs their first lead, 24-21, then Lashley, Klayten Perrault and Jake Haugse went pin-pin-pin to close it out.
Leading 1-0 in the third period, Lashley stuck Maverick Kindred in 4:36.
“At my weight class, you’re going against these kids that are super strong. You get to the second and third period, it comes down to who can outlast who,” Lashley said.
Perrault and Haugse both took care of business in less than a minute.
Younggreen earned his 100th career win, but just his seventh of the season against no defeats. He suffered multiple ligament injuries in his left knee late in the football season.
“These are the cards I was dealt,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting in better condition and getting ready for the postseason.
“We knew Assumption was tough in the lower weights, but our guys battled.”
Assumption defeated Monroe PCM, 37-30, in its semifinal match, then built a 21-3 lead after five bouts in the finals before Mount Vernon stormed back.
