2A Iowa boys’ state wrestling results: Ethan Wood, 1 of Mount Vernon’s 5 quarterfinalists, is thankful he kept wrestling

DES MOINES — Mount Vernon’s Ethan Wood laughed and shook his head slightly.

Even for him, it was hard to fathom he told coaches he wanted to play winter baseball over wrestling as a freshman and then considered skipping last season as well.

“Now, thinking about that, I just can’t believe I even said it,” said Wood, who played varsity baseball as a freshman and has gained interest from NCAA Division I FCS schools for football. “Wrestling is so fun.”

Good decision. Imagine what he would have missed. Wood made his second appearance and advanced to the 285-pound quarterfinals for the first time at the Class 2A boys’ state wrestling tournament Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena. The Mustangs finished Day 1 in second place with 33 points, trailing Burlington Notre Dame by 3 1/2.

Wood (40-3) defeated Webster City’s Landon Griffin, 5-1, and was one of five Mount Vernon quarterfinalists. The Mustangs combined for a 7-3 record during the first session.

“We wrestled really well,” Mount Vernon Coach Vance Light said. “The five guys that were seeded wrestled well. A few had close matches but if it were easy to get down here there would be a lot more people here.”

Wood said he is glad he returned to the team last season, which ended with 41 wins and an earlier exit than hoped. He has been motivated to improve that 2-2 state showing a year ago.

“Last year, I got a bitter taste in my mouth, coming down here and not finishing exactly how I wanted to,” Wood said. “I wanted to come out this year strong. I had to start with that first victory.

“I want to be a state champ. I’ve put in the work. Now, I just have to execute here.”

This season even came with a new weight class. Wood was a 195-pounder as a sophomore and has bumped to heavyweight for this season. The move took a slight adjustment but he’s settled in with a style that allowed him to take Griffin down to his back for a four-point move in the second period.

“At the beginning of the year it was a little difficult,” Wood said. “Those bigger guys are harder to move around but I just learned how to wrestle my style against those bigger guys over the past few months. It’s worked out well.”

The gains are mental, too. Wood is wrestling to win instead of not losing. Light has witnessed the progress in the postseason.

“Just in the last two weeks he’s gotten a lot better,” Light said. “It’s all about attitude.”

Wood was joined in the quarterfinals by teammates Klayten Perreault (106), returning state finalist Jase Jaspers (138), three-time state medalist Jackson Jaspers at 144 and 150-pounder Mikey Ryan.

Perreault sparked the Mustangs in the second round, while Ryan posted a major decision on the same mat and immediately after Jase Jaspers’ pin. Top-seeded Perreault is used to being the sparkplug and responded with a first-period fall.

“Depending on your match kind of sets the mood for the rest of the team,” Perreault said. “There is a little bit of pressure going into that, but we have a lot of good kids this year. Hopefully, we’re going to be able to make Mount Vernon history and be the first team to get two (trophies) in a row.”

Union puts 4 of 5 qualifiers in the state wrestling quarterfinals

Union Community is looking for a trophy of its own with some high-powered individuals. The Knights only qualified five wrestlers but four moved on to the quarterfinals. All won at least one match, putting Union in sixth with 24 points.

The Knights’ two-time state champion and top-seeded 126-pounder Jace Hedeman and defending 113 state titlist Brayden Bohnsack both won by pin. Coy Mehlert (106) and 150-pounder Caleb Olson added major decisions for Union.

“We got bonus points in four matches and we talked about that,” Mehlert said. “It’s take care of business, but talked about the opportunity is going to present itself and you have to capitalize on those if you want a team trophy at the end.”

West Delaware’s Brent Yonkovic eyes a return to the state wrestling podium

Benton Community advanced three to the quarterfinals. Troy Kupka (190) won by pin, Brenden Heying (165) added a technical fall and Elijah Kupka (132) also won for the Bobcats.

West Delaware, Decorah, South Tama, Independence and Anamosa each moved two into the quarterfinals.

Brent Yonkovic was one of the second-round winners for the Hawks. He pinned Williamsburg’s Cael Moore in 1:30 at 175.

“The game plan was to go out there and score points,” Yonkovic said.

Yonkovic was fifth as a freshman but was pinned in the second round last year. He didn’t make the podium. Yonkovic is calm and collected, locked and loaded.

“I think a lot of it is mindset,” Yonkovic said. “Have the confidence to go out there and have some fun. A lot of people feel pressure out there but I’ve been out there three years in a row. I’m just kind of used to it.

“Let it fly. Wrestle as hard as I can.”

Class 2A continues with quarterfinals and consolation matches Thursday at 9 a.m.
