#2 Iowa Pins Down Indiana 35-6
To be honest, and I am a little ashamed to say this, this was my 1st ever Iowa wrestling meet. I am 24 so I am young but I am kind of disappointed in myself. By the end of the night though I had lost my voice a little and am much more of a wrestling fan now that I have seen it live. Here's what I was able to take in:
On a chilly night in Iowa City, the Iowa Hawkeyes came out all heated up against Indiana winning the dual Friday night in Carver Hawkeye Arena 35-6. Iowa extended its dual match unbeaten streak to 74 straight with the win as they took 8 of 10 matches on the night. Iowa improved its overall record to 12-0-1 and 5-0 in the Big Ten. Iowa is the only unbeaten team in the country.
Matt McDonough(125) started the night with a pin in the 3rd period of his match against Indiana's Justin Brooks. Soon after both Tony Ramos(133) and Derek St John(157) won their matches also with pins. St. John defeated 5th ranked Paul Young of the Hoosiers for the upset.
Montell Marion in his first match in Carver Hawkeye this year won a major decision 13-5 at 141 for the Hawks. After the first 3 matches Iowa had a commanding lead at 16-0. Matt Ballweg lost his match at 149 to get Indiana on the board with 3 but the momentum was stolen back with St. John's pin at 157.
Aaron Janssen followed up St. Johns upset with a major decision at 165 winning 14-5. After this match Iowa had opened a 26-3 lead. Jake Kerr was next for the Hawkeyes at 174. The match proved to be exciting as Kerr was tied 1-1 late in the 3rd but with 2 seconds left in the match he recorded a takedown and two nearfall points to win 5-1.
Grant Gambrell took another win for the Hawkeyes extending the Iowa team lead to 32-3 with his decision 5-3 over Indiana's Eric Cameron. The best match of the night was at 197 with No. 12 Luke Lofthouse for Iowa winning his match against No. 5 Matt Powless for Indiana. Lofthouse had 4 takedowns and won 10-5. Lofthouse was noticeably excited after the match pumping up the Carver Hawkeye crowd of 7,067.
At heavyweight, Indiana's No. 9 Ricky Alcala won 6-5 over Iowa's Blake Rasing in a match that was more about stall warnings not being called then actual wrestling.
Iowa is scheduled to wrestle again on Feb. 11th against No.24 Purdue (5-6-1, 0-2 in Big Ten) in Indiana. Iowa will then return home to honor its 5 seniors against No. 13 Michigan on Feb. 13th. HawkeyeBeat
