With the arrival of November, Eastern Iowa’s fall sweater weather is expected to change to winter jacket weather for this week.
A cold front that began swooping Sunday across the Midwest is forecast to drive temperatures 10 to 15 degrees below normal for early November, according to the National Weather Service. For Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, that means highs dipping below 50 degrees and lows dropping below freezing for this workweek. But it may bounce back next week to a more typical high above 50 for this time of year.
There could be some comforting news about the impending winter for those who can’t stand cold weather. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts that for the second year in a row, the cooler Pacific Ocean waters known as La Nina will deflect the Jet Stream farther north more frequently, affecting weather patterns across the United States. The upshot is that roughly half of Iowa — a part that includes Cedar Rapids and Iowa City — will have chances “leaning” toward winter temperatures being warmer than normal. The rest of Iowa is predicted to be a toss up — could be warmer or not. The biggest impact of La Nina is in February and March.
