The National Weather Service on Sunday afternoon downgraded the risk of severe storms in Eastern Iowa on Monday, but the higher risk remains for much of the northern third of the state.
The National Weather Service’s Quad Cities bureau puts the risk of severe weather at “enhanced” for much of the state — the third-highest level on a five-level scale from the Storm Prediction Center. Earlier Sunday, meteorologists had put the risk level at “moderate,” which is the fourth level.
According to a weather briefing issued Sunday afternoon, “damaging winds, very large hail and tornadoes” are possible north of Highway 20 in northern Iowa. Areas to the south -- including Cedar Rapids and Iowa City -- could still see wind gusts of more than 50 mph and large hail, although the risk has decreased.
There are two time periods when storms are possible: Monday afternoon and Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service’s briefing includes storm planning advice. Residents are advised to ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather alerts — especially while they are sleeping — and make sure their shelter is clean and accessible.
