Semi, pickup collide near Gilbertville; one person seriously hurt

One person was seriously injured in a crash between a pickup and a semi-trailer truck in the construction zone of Interstate 380 and Highway 20 west of Gilbertville Monday.

The crash shut down the northbound portion of Interstate 380.

The accident was reported shortly after noon on Monday. It happened where Highway 20 and Interstate 380 merge near Gilbertville.

The driver of the pickup was trapped in a vehicle for about an hour. The semi and the pickup caught fire. Air care was dispatched to transport the victim.

A witness said the pickup was smoking, and road workers and the semi driver rushed to help the pickup's driver before medics arrived.

Fire crews arrived to spray down the hogs in the semi while the rescue was ongoing.

Witnesses said the pickup was southbound and may have over-corrected and went into the northbound lanes, striking the semi.
