The weather in Eastern Iowa over the next 48 hours is expected to include heavy rain, strong winds, plummeting temperatures and a chance of snow.
The National Weather Service’s Quad Cities bureau issued a weather forecast Monday that predicts widespread rainfall from late Monday through Tuesday could total 0.75 to 1.5 inches across Eastern Iowa.
Most of the rain is expected to fall Tuesday morning through Tuesday evening.
In many places, the ground still is frozen or partially frozen. That could increase the possibility of rainfall runoff. Localized flash flooding and river flooding is possible with the heavy rain.
Following the rain Tuesday, the temperature will drop Wednesday. In Cedar Rapids, the NWS is forecasting a high of 39 degrees.
Snow is likely Wednesday, but it will be light. Strong winds could reduce visibility across the area. The NWS reports strong northwest wind gusts of 40-50 mph are possible, even up to 60 mph in some places across Eastern Iowa.
Travel may be difficult Wednesday, especially on west-east oriented roads, the NWS reports.
