Much of Eastern Iowa is under “enhanced” warning of severe weather, mostly after 4 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service’s Quad Cities bureau.

Beyond heavy winds, the storms brought flash flooding in Iowa City and farther south, where the weather service said rains up to 3.5 inches from the storm were reported.

A team of three ISU instructors and 13 students traversed the Midwest for eight days in late May, chasing storms and visiting weather centers and landmarks as part of a course on storm observation.

A trained weather spotter reported about 6:30 p.m. that there were 8 to 10 inches of water covering the roadway between West Park Road and Rocky Shore Drive in Iowa City.

Another round of minor flooding is on its way as the weather service predicts segments of the Wapsipinicon, Maquoketa, English and Cedar rivers -- among others in Eastern Iowa -- will reach flood stage in the coming days.

The Cedar River was expected to crest overnight and then drop below flood stage by Sunday morning.

The floodwater has receded and almost all of Rock Valley is accessible again, allowing homeowners to assess damage.

“Rising waters on the Cedar River make recreational use of the river dangerous for boaters, canoe/kayakers, and tubers,” the city said in a statement.

Severe storms bring tornadoes and hail Tuesday night through the Corridor.

More severe weather was forecast to move in overnight, bringing large hail, damaging winds and even a brief tornado or two in parts of Western Iowa and Eastern Nebraska.

With the announcement, federal funding is available to affected individuals in the counties of Clay, Emmet, Lyon, Plymouth and Sioux.

Flooding in the Midwest killed at least two, collapsed a railroad bridge near Sioux City and sent water surging around a dam Monday after days of heavy rains that have forced hundreds of people to evacuate or be rescued from rising waters.
