A strong cold front is bringing evening temps to low 30s and high 20s, promising frozen frights for trick-or-treaters.
The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning that starts at 1 a.m. Saturday and expires at 9 a.m. in the northern counties and 8 a.m. in counties father south. The warning means that temperatures as low as 28 to 30 degrees are expected.
Belle Plaine is scraping the bottom of its water reserves and is searching for reprieve and solutions. It’s not the only Iowa town suffering amid the record drought.
The weather service said the advisory is generally north of Highway 30, but “patchy frost is possible” farther south down to the Interstate 80 corridor.
This is the first year that exceptional drought has been recorded in Eastern Iowa.

Almost 84 percent of the county is experiencing extreme drought — the second-highest drought intensity, according to this week’s U.S. Drought Monitor update.
As a whole, the state is drier than it’s been in more than a month. Iowa averaged less than a third of its normal rainfall last week, and high temperatures have hovered above 90 degrees since last weekend.
Iowa’s public universities are back in session, with students kicking off the fall semester this week under sweltering heat — making the start especially uncomfortable for some of the tens of thousands who moved into residence hall rooms without air conditioning.
In 1936, temperatures topped 100 degrees 19 times.
