Motorcyclist hits deer near Oelwein, is killed by oncoming van

A Waterloo motorcyclist died and his passenger was injured in a collision with a deer Sunday evening near Oelwein, authorities said.
Multiple agencies responded to the accident around 9 p.m. on Highway 281, just west of Highway 150. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a motorcyclist was eastbound when he hit a deer, and he and another rider were thrown off the bike.
The driver of the motorcycle, Dean H. Cox, 47, of Waterloo, was in the roadway when he was struck by an eastbound van driven by Jennifer Williams, 24, of Oelwein, authorities said. Cox died from his injuries.
A passenger on the motorcycle, Tonya Fields, 31, of Fairbank, was taken by ambulance to Mercy Hospital in Oelwein for treatment of her injuries.
Williams was not injured, according to the Patrol's report.
