CEDAR RAPIDS — Akeela Jefferson helped elevate the Cedar Rapids Xavier volleyball program to unprecedented heights.
And Tuesday, revealed her next step, announcing her commitment to South Dakota State University.
'I had already been there for a visit, and I fell in love with it,' Jefferson said Wednesday morning. 'The coach is amazing, the teammates are so nice. I can tell they are teammates I will get along with.'
Jefferson was an all-tournament selection last week as the Saints (29-9) advanced to the Class 4A state final. She averaged 3.67 kills per set and a kill efficiency of .256.
In Jefferson's three seasons as a starter, Xavier went 93-29 with three final-four finishes at state.
'I owe (head coach) Austin (Filer) and the staff a lot for my success,' Jefferson said. 'They care for us as players individually. I really don't think I would be where I am with out them.'
Jefferson intends a fashion-merchandising major at SDSU, a member of the Summit League. The Jackrabbits are 6-23 this season.
