More often that not, October has been very good to the North Tama Redhawks.
Very good.
Wednesday night, North Tama begins pursuit of a sixth appearance at the state volleyball tournament in the last nine years. The third-ranked Redhawks (25-13) welcome BGM (12-9) for a Class 1A regional quarterfinal.
North Tama made its first state run in 2017, then returned in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024. Three starters are back from last year’s qualifying team, including returning all-staters Kruiz Ewoldt and Addison Hochstetler.
Here are five of Wednesday’s top regional matches that feature area teams:
Durant (10-15) at Cascade (17-12)
2A Region 1
While top-ranked Denver is the supreme team on the top of this regional bracket, the bottom half is wide open, and both of these teams are hopeful for an opportunity to get a shot at the reigning champion in a regional final. Cascade’s Addison Frake is in the beginning of her final season of a memorable four-sport career; she averages 4.48 kills per set and owns a .331 kill efficiency. Younger sister Emma Frake, a sophomore, distributes 8.42 assists per set.
Northeast (10-14) at Maquoketa Valley (17-13)
2A Region 5
No. 5 Dyersville Beckman headlines this region, and this victor, more than likely, will face the Blazers in a regional semifinal Monday. Maquoketa Valley was the runner-up of the Tri-Rivers Conference West Division, and has won nine of its last 10 matches to surge past the .500 mark. Seniors Lanni Beaman (2.57 kills per set) and Macee Nolan (7.17 assists per set) pilot the Wildcats’ attack. Junior Jordan Tegeler is the Rebels’ leader, at 3.91 kills per set and a .329 kill rate.
West Branch (18-17) at Lisbon (33-9)
2A Region 6
This will be much more competitive than the records might indicate. In fact, the Varsity Bound power index rates this as a toss-up with West Branch 23rd and Lisbon 25th in 2A. Lisbon has won 25-plus matches for each of the past nine seasons, and the undisputed star on this team is senior Mykala Luzum-Selmon (4.33 kills, 3.83 digs per set). West Branch has bounced back nicely this fall after a 6-25 2024 campaign. Three of the Bears’ top four attackers are seniors.
Starmont (12-13) at Edgewood-Colesburg (22-16)
1A Region 2
Ed-Co claimed a five-set Tri-Rivers Conference West Division victory over its border rival Oct. 9, and this could be another marathon match. In the previous match, Ed-Co’s Lilee Boriskey pounded 31 kills, while Starmont’s Josi Munger collected 32, and the duo combined for 152 swings. Ed-Co has won seven of its last eight matches. Both teams were convincing straight-set winners in the opening round.
BGM (12-9) at No. 3 North Tama (25-13)
1A Region 3
As always, North Tama plays a super-challenging schedule compared to most 1A schools, and the Redhawks will be both tested and rested (they earned a first-round Monday bye). BGM, meanwhile, picked up a road sweep against Hillcrest Academy behind 10 kills from sophomore Emersyn Minnaert. Iowa Star Conference South Division champion North Tama gets 3.55 kills per set from Ewoldt.
