Vogt sisters (and mother) key Waukee Northwest in 5A state volleyball first-round victory over Cedar Falls
Blazing start helps Wolves get their first state-tournament win in their brief history

CORALVILLE — The Vogts are in, and it’s unanimous:
This is one uncommon volleyball family.
Kamryn, Avery, Logan. Senior, sophomore, freshman.
“All of my kids are pretty competitive,” said Jodi Vogt, mother — and coach — of all three. “They just like to compete.”
They’ll compete together for at least one more match. Maybe two.
Third-ranked Waukee Northwest dazzled in the first set, hitting a collective .524, and defeated No. 6 Cedar Falls in four sets (25-12, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22) in a Class 5A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament Monday afternoon at Xtream Arena.
“It was really fun,” said Kamryn, the eldest and a University of Northern Iowa commit. “It’s a good dynamic playing with your sisters. And you create a bond with the whole team, not just your sisters.”
Northwest (25-9) gets its third crack at No. 2 Ankeny Centennial (31-6) in the semifinal round at 10:25 a.m. Wednesday.
Centennial outlasted No. 7 Ankeny in five sets Monday and beat Northwest in the first two meetings between the teams this season.
“They beat us in three, then we prepared a little harder, and they beat us in five,” Coach Vogt said. “We’re going to prepare the same way. It’s going to be a dogfight.”
Northwest was brilliant out of the gate. The Wolves collected 13 kills — against two errors — in 21 opening-set swings.
“We fell short here in the first round,” Kamryn said. “There was a lot of excitement today, and all of that adrenaline really helped.”
Cedar Falls (34-7) rallied from an 18-15 deficit to win Game 2 and square the match. But the Wolves regained momentum and dominated the rest of the match.
Logan Vogt, a 6-foot-1 freshman, posted 12 kills. The eldest Vogt added 11 kills, as did Katrina Pelds. Kathy Lockyear collected 34 assists, Avery Vogt 13.
Paige Paup paced Cedar Falls with 13 kills, but committed 14 attack errors.
