CLASS 3A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Mount Vernon 3, No. 8 Mid-Prairie 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16)
Top-ranked Mount Vernon has one of the best offensive attacks in the state.
The Golden Hawks hang their hat on defense, which helped them make the state field for the first time in 20 seasons.
Chalk one up for the offense of the Mustangs, but it certainly did not come easily.
Coach Maggie Willems’ team needed every bit of its offensive skill to fend off the Golden Hawks.
Louisville commit Chloe Meester led the Mustangs (43-4) offense with 14 kills. Arkansas commit Sydney Laue had 10. For Mid-Prairie (33-9), Jovi Evans had 12 kills and 11 digs.

No. 2 Western Christian 3, No. 7 Sioux Center 2 (25-13, 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 15-13)
Tied at two sets, and at 13-apiece in Game 5, second-ranked Western made the two deciding plays and outlasted No. 7 Sioux Center.
Western’s reward is an unheard-of 24th consecutive semifinal berth.
“The tradition of Western Christian ... I grew up watching them win state championships,” freshman Morgan Kooiman said. “It’s so much fun to finally be a part of it.”
Scarlett Winterfeld led Western with 21 kills. Bentley Bliek added 14, Kooiman 11.
Margo Schuiteman paced Sioux Center with 16 kills.

No. 4 Dubuque Wahlert 3, No. 5 Carroll Kuemper 1 (25-18, 22-25, 25-23, 25-17)
Dubuque Wahlert’s growth as a team was on full display at a critical point.
After winning the first set, the Golden Eagles dropped the second and fell behind 22-19 in the third.
With Carroll Kuemper in prime position to take a 2-1 lead in the match, the Golden Eagles dug in.
“I think they did a great job of keeping their composure,” said Wahlert Coach Lindsay Beaves. “I think in the past we would have lost that set and would have gotten down on ourselves.”
After a timeout, the No. 4 Golden Eagles went on a five-point run, then maintained control in the fourth set.
Audrey Tschiggfrie and Anna Roling led the offense with 14 kills each for Wahlert. Brianna Wittrock had 19 kills for the Knights, who finish 37-4.

No. 3 West Delaware 3, No. 6 Davenport Assumption 1 (25-19, 25-13, 18-25, 25-20)
Their momentum was slipping. Their energy was ebbing.
After dominating the first two sets and dropping the third, the West Delaware Hawks needed a boost.
“We had to remember that this is a sport, and it’s supposed to be fun,” Hannah Cantwell said. “We picked up our intensity, and made sure to have fun.”
Winning is fun, and the third-ranked Hawks (39-6) were able to close out a four-set Class 3A quarterfinal triumph.
Assumption (25-9) erased a five-point deficit to Game 4 to climb into a 14-14 deadlock. But Vedah Langel swatted the go-ahead kill, then successive blocks by Kate Wenger and Lauren LeClere staked the Hawks to an 18-14 advantage.
The Knights never got closer than three points again.
Cantwell led all hitters with 20 kills. LeClere added 13 for the Hawks; Brooke Krogmann posted 11, including the clincher.

CLASS 2A QUARTERFINALS
No. 1 Denver 3, No. 11 Boyden-Hull 0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21)
Jamie Johnson called it “a little messy at times.”
Top-ranked Denver had some issues, especially behind the service line.
However, when it counted the most, the Cyclones came through with a big play. While concerned with the serving, Denver's coach was proud of her team’s resolve.
“I appreciated the fact that the girls did not get tight,” Johnson said. “They didn't get rattled, the kept their composure and found a way to win it.”
The Cyclones (45-3) were often their own worst enemy, missing 12 serves in 73 attempts.
Twin sisters Bailey and Grace Mullihan led Denver with eight kills each. Alayna Akers had 13 digs. Elsie Hoegh led Boyden-Hull (19-13) with 14 kills. Jenna Vollink had 17 digs.

No. 2 Eddyville EBF 3, No. 8 Iowa City Regina 0 (25-23, 25-13, 25-19)
Sport to sport, season to season, the Shafer twins of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont are a unique pair.
“We have this weird connection,” Kate said. “We are each other’s rock.”
In the fall, it comes down to this: Kate sets, Molly swings and the Rockets roll.
The first set was knotted at 22-22, but Molly Shafer notched three kills in a closing 3-1 run.
“We were right there with them in the first set,” Regina Coach Lauren Hansen said. “We didn’t serve quite aggressive enough to get them out of system, and they were hitting over our block.”

No. 4 Dike-New Hartford 3, No. 5 Aplington-Parkersburg 0 (25-22, 25-12, 25-16)
Some of the names may have changed, but the result, at least on Tuesday afternoon, looked very familiar.
Dike-New Hartford may have lost three all-staters from last year's 50-0 Class 2A state volleyball championship team, but those who took their place looked more than capable of making it back-to-back titles for the Wolverines.
Coach Diane Harms’ team (30-15) was in control from start to finish Tuesday.
“The girls came in this year and for a lot of them it was the first time they really got on the floor,” said Harms, who is in search of her 10th state title. “They are making the most of their opportunities.
“They are very skilled players who were just waiting for their chance. They have been down here before as part of the team, but getting to actually play on the court is very special.”
Izzy Norton led the Wolverines with 12 kills. Peyton Klooster paced the Falcons (36-7) with eight kills.

No. 3 Dyersville Beckman 3, No. 6 South Hardin 0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22)
The Blazers just keep coming at you. And that depth was on full display in a quarterfinal sweep of South Hardin.
“We have a lot of players, a lot of options that we can go to,” senior Katelyn Schmitt said. “It feels good to go hard, then take a break and cheer from the bench.”
The opener was tied 18-18 before Beckman rattled off seven points in a row. Schmitt closed it with a sequence of block-block-kill.
Beckman scored 11 of the final 17 points of Game 2, then stormed back from an early 11-5 deficit in the finale.
Schmitt had back-to-back kills in a pivotal four-point surge that put the Blazers in command, 21-18.
Schmitt and freshman Joy Burkle led the Blazers with nine kills apiece. Ava Burkle added seven.

Katie Quick that is.

No. 4 Oakland Riverside 3, No. 5 North Tama 2 (18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 15-11)
After dropping the first set, Riverside rebounded to win the second set and were cruising in the third set, building an 11-point lead.
North Tama battled back and took the set, which could have easily been the beginning of the end for the Bulldogs.
“When you get to state, it is usually the top eight teams in your class,” Riverside Coach Brooke Flathers said. “It is going to be a dogfight and everybody is trying to keep their season alive. Our girls are no different.”
Not only are the Bulldogs (39-3) alive, they are one of four left standing.
Riverside relied on a balanced attack to advance. Sophia Taylor led the way with 17 kills. Bentley Rone added 13 and Elly Henderson had 12.
Kruiz Ewoldt led North Tama with 26 kills. Lily Sell added 13.

No. 6 Conrad BCLUW 3, No. 3 Fort Madison Holy Trinity 0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19)
Trailing 22-19 in the opening set, the Comets went to work. Sarah Gerber’s kill tied it, then Klayre Gallentine’s ace put BCLUW in front for good.
BCLUW built on that momentum, rocketed to a 6-0 lead in Game 2, and rolled from there.
Holy Trinity (29-13) led 9-6 in the third set, but BCLUW went on an 8-2 surge, and led the rest of the way.
BCLUW’s Grace Farnsworth led all attackers with 15 kills (and posted a team-high 17 digs); Olivia Peters added 13.
The Comets played the cleaner match, committing just 12 attack errors to the Crusaders’ 22.
