Bailey Boeve and the Blackhawks of Hinton cruise in a 2A state volleyball quarterfinal

CORALVILLE — Bailey Boeve is a year older, stronger.
But, she said, the biggest change from Freshman Bailey to Sophomore Bailey is her tenacity.
“I definitely am trying to be more aggressive,” she said. “I’m trying to develop a faster swing. Hopefully that helps me become more diverse.”
Boeve collected 16 kills, and second-ranked Hinton dusted No. 8 Aplington-Parkersburg in a straight-set Class 2A quarterfinal at the state volleyball tournament Tuesday afternoon at Xtream Arena.
Scores were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-16.
“There was just an energy there,” Boeve said. “Once we step on the court, it’s go-time, and we went for it.”
The Blackhawks (31-1) won their 22nd consecutive match since a Sept. 23 loss to Sioux City Heelan. They’ll face No. 3 Grundy Center (38-7) in a 2A semifinal at 4:25 Wednesday afternoon.
A 5-foot-11 middle hitter, Boeve is the state leader in blocks, by a wide margin. She was credited with 3.5 blocks Tuesday, sending her season total to 194.5.
Hinton never trailed, and ended the match in 62 minutes, partially because of its ability to keep Aplington-Parkersburg (34-9) from stringing together runs of points. The Blackhawks were successful in siding out 36 times in 44 A-P serves (82 percent).
Boeve’s 16 kills — against three errors — came on 31 swings, a kill efficiency of .419. Five of her teammates had four kills or more.
“We’re a family over individuals,” Boeve said. “If somebody else gets a kill, I think we cheer more for them than we do ourselves.”
Avery Meyer had six kills for Aplington-Parkersburg.
