Talk about your role at The Gazette.
I’m a photojournalist, so what that entails is taking photos around the community, covering different topics like sports, features and breaking news. I’ve been with The Gazette for four years.
What do you like about being a photojournalist?
I love being a photojournalist because it gets me out in the community and I get to meet a variety of different people, anywhere from a clock maker to a someone breaking records in basketball.
Where are you from?
I’m originally from Portland, Oregon — so a long ways from Iowa, but I actually went to high school in Iowa. I attended the University of Oregon and got my bachelor’s degree in journalism with a focus in photojournalism. Go Ducks!
What’s a memorable story that you’ve covered?
Something I’m really passionate about is telling female-driven stories. As someone who works in a very male dominated industry, I love being able to go behind the lens and really show the community what’s happening. So a story that I covered was about midwives and I followed (a midwife) to different live births. It was something that we haven’t covered before and I was really proud to put that out there.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I have three dogs and then I just recently had a baby, so I like traveling around and checking out new things and going on road trips. That’s really fun — but I also usually have my camera in my hand, taking photos of nature and my family.
Share a fun fact about yourself.
I have lived all over the country doing different internships and photography jobs, so it’s allowed me to see a lot of our country.
