Iowa City West’s Moustafa Tiea dazzles in the middle distances at Forwald-Coleman Relays
He wins the 400 and 800, and anchors two winning relays, including a record-setting sprint medley

IOWA CITY — Now, that was a stirring set of bookends.
Moustafa Tiea opened the running portion of the Forwald-Coleman Relays with a record-setting relay anchor, and he closed it with an improbable comeback in the finale.
He did plenty in between, too.
“He’s killing it right now,” Iowa City West boys’ track and field coach T.J. Craig said. “Wherever you put him, you know you’re going to get his best.”
Tiea ran four winning races — two individual, two relays — to lead West to the boys’ team title Thursday night at Iowa City High’s Bates Field/Raffensperger Track.
“I’m here for whatever they need me,” he said. “Coming off from cross country and running 1,600s, running 400s is like a Bingo game.”
Tiea’s program Thursday — the day before Drake Relays qualification cutoff — was three 400s and an 800.
All were winners.
“I really made fresh legs a mindset,” he said. “I feel I can run fast if I deserve it.”
Let’s start at the end.
Tiea got the baton in fifth place when he anchored the Trojans’ 1,600-meter relay. He moved into contention on the backstretch, then won going away.
West was clocked in 3:26.76.
“I was a ways back, and didn’t have anything to lose,” he said after a 49.8-second split. I figured, ‘If I die, I die.’ I’m happy with myself.“
Tiea opened the night by anchoring West to a meet record in the sprint medley relay. Harel Garneti, Daniel Robinson, Izaiah Loveless and Tiea ran in 1:33.50.
In his two individual triumphs, Tiea ran 50.15 in the 400 and 1:55.82 in the 800.
West won seven boys’ events and compiled 145 points. West Des Moines Valley was second with 122.5, followed by City High (119.5).
Pleasant Valley claimed the girls’ title with 166 points, setting the only girls’ meet record of the night, 3:58.49 in the 1,600 relay.
Waukee was next with 125.
The state leader in the boys’ long jump (23 feet, 1 inch), Cedar Rapids Prairie junior T.Y. Pour leaped 22-10 Thursday.
He is about 2 feet beyond his marks from last year.
“I feel really good right now,” Pour said. “I’m working on having a consistent routine, hydrate a lot, mental reps, landing drills.”
