Western Dubuque’s Quentin Nauman adds 800 and 1,600 titles to conclude phenomenal state track and field meet
State track and field, Class 3A boys: Bobcats also get titles from Ashton Hogrefe in the 110-meter hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay team and win the team title

DES MOINES — Perhaps the most startling part about Quentin Nauman’s swift ascent is his youth.
The Western Dubuque distance ace is only a sophomore.
“I just keep doing work and trusting the process,” Nauman said. “I’ve trusted it so far.”
And heaven knows, he trusts his kick.
Nauman concluded a phenomenal weekend at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium with a 55.9-second closing lap in the Class 3A 1,600-meter run.
His final time: 4 minutes, 12.80 seconds.
That was Nauman’s fourth title, and as it turned out, Western Dubuque needed every bit of his heroics.
The Bobcats edged Adel ADM, 72-71, for the team title, their first in school history.
“I did my part, and my teammates did theirs,” said Nauman, who won the 3,200 on Thursday, anchored the distance medley relay Friday and claimed the 800 and 1,600 titles Saturday.
His open times: 1:51.60, 4:12.80 and 8:54.11.
Did we mention that he’s a sophomore?
Western Dubuque’s Ashton Hogrefe won the 110-meter hurdles (14.44) and anchored the Bobcats’ shuttle hurdle relay; Brandon Decker, Jaden Then, Tyler Horstman and Ashton Hogrefe prevailed in 58.06 seconds.
After his moment atop the infield podium, Hogrefe stepped down and huddled for a prolonged moment with second- and third-place finishers Tristan Rheingans of DeWitt Central and Aren Schlemme of Clear Creek Amana.
“We all compete against each other, but we don’t see each other as enemies,” Hogrefe said. “I feel I can talk to anybody I race against. We’re going to push each other to be the best that we can.”
Four Wamac Conference teams finished in the top 10: Solon was fifth, Clear Creek Amana and Center Point-Urbana tied for sixth and Williamsburg placed ninth.
CPU’s Jack Witte, Cooper Grimm, Peyton Stowers and Nathan Miller finished second to Ballard in the 1,600-meter relay (3:19.99).
Williamsburg’s Alex Reese, Clayten Steckly, Braylon Wetjen and Rayce Heitman were second to Newton in the sprint medley relay (1:31.97).
South Tama’s Tommy Tyynismaa was second to Nauman in the 800, in 1:53.20.
