DES MOINES — Fifth place never felt so good.
Four fateful points in the 400-meter relay were enough for Western Dubuque to clinch the Class 3A boys’ championship at the state track and field meet Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
Led by Quentin Nauman’s remarkable four-title weekend, the Bobcats edged Adel ADM for the crown, 72-71.
“That’s Quentin,” Western Dubuque’s Grant Glausser said. “We don’t expect anything less of him.
A sophomore, Nauman won the 800-, 1,600- and 3,200-meter races and anchored the Bobcats’ distance medley relay.
Austin Hogrefe won the 110-meter hurdles and anchored the shuttle hurdle title team.
Lisbon sprinted its way to its second consecutive 1A boys’ title; the Lions’ 76 points were 27 more than runner-up Woodbine.
“We just had to finish the job,” said sprinter Baylor Speidel, the champion of the 100 and 200, and the anchor of the Lions’ 4x100 and 4x200 gold medalists.
Tipton junior Noelle Steines was a four-time winner, too (Class 2A girls 800, 1,500, 3,000 and distance medley).
“It’s awesome. I’ve had a lot of success at other meets, but I'm so proud of my team,” said Steines, who led Tipton to a third-place finish in the 2A girls’ team race, behind repeat champion Van Meter and Pella Christian.
Other girls’ team champions were Pleasant Valley (4A), ADM (3A) and Saint Ansgar (1A).
Ankeny scored a whopping 112 points to win the 4A boys’ title; Mediapolis was the 2A boys’ champion.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy set an all-time Iowa best in the boys’ 400-meter relay, in 41.27 seconds.
The three-day attendance was 39,537, just shy of last year’s record crowd.
