IOWA CITY — The “preponement” of the Forwald-Coleman Relays prevented weather issues.
It did present a challenge of its own.
For the boys’ track and field team from Cedar Rapids Prairie, it meant back-to-back competition nights.
“We needed a lot of sleep (Tuesday night),” senior William Roelfs said. “Yeah, it was a challenge.”
The Hawks met it just fine.
Prairie capped Wednesday’s meet with the 1,600-meter title: Drew Bennis, Roelfs, Brady Peterka and Carson Nove posted a 3:23.73 effort that moved the foursome to No. 4 in the state this season.
“We were hoping to cut a second (off our season-best time),” Nove said.
The meet, hosted by Iowa City High at Raffensperger Track/Bates Field, was originally scheduled for Thursday.
But with the Drake Relays qualifying cutoff looming Friday morning and a forecast for storms Thursday, City officials opted to move it up a day.
Iowa City West’s boys and Pleasant Valley’s girls copped the team titles.
Led by a distance medley unit that climbed to No. 2 in the state (3:30.29), West won seven events and accumulated 164.5 points. Prairie was second with 153.
Mason Woods, Jason Manson, KingSton Swayze and South Carolina commit Moustafa Tiea ran that fleet D-med for the Trojans.
West also got a 1-2 finish in the shot put from James Barnett and Colin Whitters, both of whom surpassed 55 feet.
Prairie won six events, including four relays.
Led by a pair of super-speedy relays, the Pleasant Valley girls tallied 181 points. City High (142) was the runner-up.
The Spartans ran 9:22.80 in the 4x800, 3:57.83 in the 4x400. Both of those efforts rank No. 2 statewide.
Middle-distance aces Grace Boleyn and Ani Wedemeyer were on both of those relays.
City High’s Maeve Bowen-Burt won the 400 and anchored the Little Hawks’ winning sprint medley relay. Iowa City West’s Amara MacLagan was the long jump champion and ran on the Trojans’ 4x100 title team.
