TIFFIN — So much for baby steps.
After spending much of her senior outdoor track season in the pool, Noelle Steines ran through a full program Thursday.
Or, as Tipton’s distance star would say: “From aqua-jogging to full-on running.”
Full-on winning.
Steines won three girls’ individual events (800, 1,500 and 3,000 meters) and anchored the triumphant distance medley relay at the Pacha Relays at Clear Creek Amana High School.
“I think the races were proof of what I can do,” she said. “I believe in myself.
“Don’t count me out.”
The highlight, certainly, was the 3,000, which she ran in 10 minutes, 12.35 seconds.
“I didn’t know I could race a time like that yet,” said Steines, who ran her final two races Thursday in a steady rain.
A recent commit of Bradley University, Steines has won eight state titles in track (including four last year), and four in cross country.
But a quadriceps strain earlier this season forced her out of action. She returned for the Drake Relays last week, which was “pretty upsetting,” she said.
Thursday was more encouraging. Like she said, once she gets to the big stage in three weeks, don’t count her out.
Clear Creek Amana swept the team titles. Five relay golds staked the Clippers to 165 points in the girls’ standings. Williamsburg (145) and Tipton (129) rounded out the top three.
Led by another monster throwing performance by Landon Prince, CCA’s boys scored 161 points. Mount Vernon was second with 102.5.
Prince established career-bests in both the discus (190 feet, 4 inches) and the shot put (64-1 1/2).
He climbed to No. 10 on the all-time Iowa list in the shot, No. 17 in the discus.
“I don’t even know what to say. I still think I have more in the tank,” he said. “If I can get my arm a little higher ... I feel I’m swooping too much ... I can really hit one in the discus. It’s super exciting.”
All of this from a guy whose career-best was 47 feet in the shot put, 167 in the discus prior to the season.
His progress is staggering. And yet, there hasn’t been a line of college coaches blowing up his phone.
“I want to throw for sure,” Prince said. “I feel my numbers are good enough to be Division-I. I’m still searching.”
While Prince lit up the throwing events, CCA sophomore Tay Seals was a three-event winner on the track, claiming the 100, 200 and anchoring the 4x100 to victory.
Other highlights:
* Tipton’s Ella Hein won the girls’ open 400 and 400 hurdles, and put Steines in good position in the distance medley.
* Ailea Wetjen of Williamsburg was the girls’ champion in the 100 and 200, and anchored the Raiders’ winning 4x100.
* Benton Community’s Ana Glawe swept the girls’ throwing events.
