Tigers edge West by a half-point
Jeff Linder Apr. 9, 2012 12:38 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS -- Brianna King had a nose for the finish line, even if her eyes were failing her.
"I couldn't see through the wind and the rain," she said.
King anchored Cedar Falls from behind in the 1,600-meter relay, allowing the Tigers to edge Iowa City West for the team title at the J-Hawk Relays girls' track meet Saturday at Kingston Stadium.
The Tigers tallied 103.5 points; West scored 103. Yeah, a half-point separated the perennial powers.
"It reminded me a lot of last year's conference meet," King said. "We won the 4-by-4, but West beat us by one point.
"I love to chase people down. Once I got on (West anchor Ashley Knudson), I stayed on her until the end of the final curve. Then I went."
Cedar Falls won seven events. West, which was missing sprinters Shahana Williams (quadriceps) and McKennan Cronbaugh (hamstring), took gold in three.
Rebecca Tanner anchored the Women of Troy's winning shuttle hurdle relay, and edged Cedar Rapids Washington's Brooke Foreman in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.43 seconds.
"I felt really strong at the end," Tanner said. "I've been lifting a lot more, trying to improve my speed."
Courtney Dauber won West's other gold medal, taking the 100 in 12.71 seconds.
The meet began in cool, windy conditions, then ended in a cold mist. Still, Linn-Mar's distance medley relay quartet managed a meet record.
Halley Morgan, Courtney Major, Audra Schminke and Rachel Perry were clocked in 4:21.46. That broke the old record of 4:22.07, set by West in 2001.
"I was concerned with running fast and getting back to my blanket," Major said. "It feels really good to have the record."
Usually a 400 runner, Perry anchored with an 800-meter split of 2:22.
"It was my first 800," she said. "I'm OK with it. I don't know what I was thinking. I was just running."
Washington was the highest-finishing Metro team, scoring 65 points for third place.
Foreman regrouped after the 100 hurdles defeat to win the 400 hurdles in 1:06.08, then led off Washington's winning 400 relay.
Other Metro winners were Prairie's Leslie Harder (high jump, 5-0), Kennedy's Capria Davis (400, 1:00.94) and Jefferson's Emma Edelen (discus, 117-9).
Edelen's title came in an event named after Jefferson throwing coach Jim O'Brien.
