Solon girls win state-qualifying meet, but hope to be healthier for state track
Iowa State signee Gracie Federspiel limited Thursday night, listed as an alternate for relays next week

SOLON — The Solon girls’ track and field team has been hampered by a significant injury.
Senior standout Gracie Federspiel — the defending Class 3A state champion in the 800-meter run — injured her foot during last week’s Wamac Conference championships, which limited the Iowa State signee to just one event — a fourth-place finish in the 800 — at a state-qualifying meet on a rain-soaked Thursday night at Solon High School.
While Federspiel’s absence did not prevent Solon from running away from the rest of the field in claiming the state-qualifier meet team title with 178 points, it surely places the Spartans’ pursuit of a third straight state championship in question.
“Not certain where she will be a week from now in the healing process,” Solon Coach Jessica Hotek said. “Kind of working through that, which obviously is heartbreaking for her but we’ll see where we are at in a week and hope for the best.”
The state meet is May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Federspiel has been named as an alternate for five of Solon’s seven relay foursomes, which all qualified for state by virtue of a top-two placement at the state-qualifying meet.
“We’re just trying to help her gain her confidence back with her foot,” Solon junior Aly Stahle said. “And helping her recover and giving her that time to heal for the most part, so she can be good by state.”
Stahle earned one of Solon’s two wins in individual events with a time of 15.66 seconds in the 100 hurdles, her first state berth in the event. Stahle bested Maquoketa’s Kacy Williams by 0.14 seconds by continuing to use a three-step rhythm between hurdles.
“I just tried to trust myself and my steps,” Stahle said. “I feel like it has been going pretty well and it is feeling more consistent at this point.”
For the second year in a row, senior Hailey Miller will compete in the long jump at the state meet after a leap of 16 feet, 7 inches was more than a foot better than the rest of the field.
“I actually started doing long jump last year,” Miller said. “That was my first year ever doing it. I did high jump my freshman year. … I was like, ‘I feel like I could be good at that.’”
With two runner-up performances apiece, Solon junior Sydney Dee (1,500 run, 3,000 run) and senior Abigail Felton (discus, shot put) also qualified for state in individual events.
“Starting in middle school and then working my way back up, just seeing myself improve every single year,” Felton said. “Things starting to click my senior year made me want to do them even more and more.”
Marion finished second in the team standings with 124 points, highlighted by individual wins from Kyra Cordes (800 run) and Abby Cave (200 dash).
Maquoketa's Isabelle Hardin (3000 run, 1500 run) and Ana Glawe of Benton Community (shot put, discus) each won two individual events.
Solon boys also claim team title
The Solon boys also won a team title, highlighted by a quartet of individual winners in Caleb Bock (long jump), Brick Kabela (1600 run), Ben Kampman (discus) and Michael Yeomans (800 run).
“I was super proud of the way they came together and just competed together,” Solon boys’ track and field coach Mark Sovers said. “The sacrifices they made for each other for us to have the kind of success that we experienced today is phenomenal. I can't say enough about this team and being the best teammates they can be.”
Tye Hardin won two events (100 dash, 400 dash) and was runner-up in another (200 dash) for the Maquoketa boys.
