DES MOINES — There were few side glances or snarls during the Class 4A girls’ discus competition at the state track and field meet Thursday afternoon.
Instead, there were high-fives, laughs and camaraderie.
“There’s a special throwers’ connection,” Iowa City High’s Rachel Haack said. “It’s a competition against each other, but we boost each other up.”
Haack’s fourth-place finish in the discus was the best by any Gazette-area 4A girls’ competitor Thursday at Drake Stadium.
The junior threw 137 feet, 5 inches.
“I feel great,” Haack said. “I had a solid series. I kept it going. Sometimes, it’s hard to stay motivated, but I was happy to compete.
“I wanted to have fun, throw 135 feet and finish in the top five.”
Check, check and check.
Ankeny is the 4A girls’ leader through five events, with 24 points. Waukee Northwest, a heavy pre-meet favorite, is second with 22.5, followed by Dallas Center-Grimes (20), Cedar Falls (19) and defending champion Pleasant Valley (17.5).
Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Reese Wiley was fifth in the 400, in 57.31 seconds.
