DES MOINES — Count Peyton Stowers among membership of the Quentin Nauman Admiration Society.
“He’s a machine. He’s not human,” Stowers said of Nauman.
“A sophomore shouldn’t be that quick.”
Nauman continued a scintillating state track and field meet Friday morning at Drake Stadium; his 1:51.5 anchor brought Western Dubuque from behind in the Class 3A distance medley relay.
The Bobcats’ quartet of Drew Burds, Grant Glausser, Brandon Decker and Nauman ran in 3:28.17. Stowers anchored Center Point-Urbana to second in 3:30.86.
“I was able to come from behind at districts, and I was closer when I got the baton today,” said Nauman, who broke the 9-minute barrier in the 3,200 meters Thursday, and will compete in the 800 and 1,500 Saturday.
Decker said, “My goal was to go out hard; I didn’t want (Nauman) to have to go as hard today.”
Nauman was asked which of the three distance races is his favorite.
“The 800,” he said. “I’ve been doing it since seventh or eighth grade.”
For Stowers and the Stormin’ Pointers, it’s the second school record of the meet.
“It feels awesome,” Stowers said.
The distance medley title, plus a runner-up finish by Ashton Hogrefe in the 400-meter hurdles, put Western Dubuque into prime position in the 3A boys’ team race heading into the final day.
Through 10 events, defending-champion Pella is the leader with 35 points. The Bobcats are second with 28, followed by Wamac Conference contenders Solon (27), CPU (26) and Clear Creek Amana (22).
The final nine events are Saturday.
Hogrefe (52.82 seconds) ran second to DeWitt Central’s Tristan Rheingans (52.64).
That gives him a sweep of the school’s three hurdles records.
“This was my last chance to do it,” he said. “It’s the best I’ve run all year, and this was the best place to do it.
“We’ve got a lot of big events coming up (Saturday), and by the end of the day, we want that team title, too.”
Clear Creek Amana’s Aren Schlemme won the long jump on his last attempt, sailing 22 feet, 2 1/2 inches.
Let’s set the stage:
Both Schlemme and Kaiden Quandahl, of Decorah, went into their final jumps at 22-2, with Quandahl leading the tie-breaker.
“I was staring at the results the whole time,” Schlemme said. “(Quandahl) went past me, and I knew I had to go further.”
Adel ADM’s 800-meter relay crew set an all-time Iowa best, in 1:25.55.
