DES MOINES -- You win some, you lose some.
And Western Dubuque’s Logan Brosius came out on both ends of a pair of razor-close races in the Class 3A boys’ hurdling competition at the state track and field meet Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Brosius anchored as Western Dubuque prevailed in the shuttle hurdle relay, then was edged at the wire in the 110-meter high hurdles.
“I hit the second, third and fourth hurdles (in the highs),” Brosius said. “I was able to get back into rhythm, but the damage was done.
“I’m definitely disappointed, but it is what it is. I strive to be the best in whatever I do, and anything else is disappointing.”
There was nothing disappointing about the Bobcats’ shuttle: Mitchell Ashline, Tanner Nauman, Devin Neuhaus and Brosius finished in 59.47 seconds, shading Pella (59.50).
It was nip-and-tuck throughout between those two teams and Carlisle.
“It was close the whole way,” Neuhaus said. “We came here to win, and we did.”
Brosius said, “We’re just thankful that we had the chance to compete. We had a lot of confidence.”
North Polk’s Hunter Manock denied Brosius in the highs, finishing in 15.07 seconds. Brosius was clocked in 15.15.
The 3A boys’ team race came down to the final event. Pella won the 1,600-meter relay and finished with 80 points. Adel ADM was second with 75.
Marion finished fifth, Clear Creek Amana was sixth, Western Dubuque was eighth.
Alex Mota had a big Saturday to ignite Marion. He was second in the 100, anchored the Indians’ 400 relay to fourth and was sixth in the 200.
“I had a good start,” Mota said after the 100, in which he ran in 12.26 seconds. Dubuque Wahlert’s Ryan Brosius won in 11.22.
“He was a good, just a little quicker than me. It would have been better to have won, but everything happens for a reason.”
Clear Creek Amana got a third-place finish from its sprint medley relay and from Harrison Rosenberg in the 110 hurdles. Benton Community’s Jacob Brecht was third in the 100, fourth in the 200.
