Apr. 30, 2018 2:18 pm
DES MOINES — Linn-Mar's Payton Wensel was voted as the most outstanding girls' high-school performer at the Drake Relays last weekend.
Wensel won three events, setting two Drake records and an all-time Iowa best.
A University of Iowa signee, Wensel established a Drake record in the 400-meter hurdles, running 1:00.25, an effort that ranks No. 2 all-time in the state.
She anchored the Lions' winning sprint medley relay with a 54.0-second split, and that unit ran 1:44.07, setting both an all-time Iowa best and a new Drake standard.
In addition, she was on Linn-Mar's winning 400-meter relay and finished second to Southeast Polk's Sydney Milani in the 800.
Gable Sieperda of Central Lyon was the top boys' high school competitor. Sieperda won the 3,200 meters in 9:11.17 and the 1,600 in 4:15.68. He also turned in a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters.
