CEDAR RAPIDS — Something old, something new, something classic, something tried-and-true are uniting for the 2016-17 Broadway at the Paramount lineup.
Season subscriptions and group tickets are on sale now, with four- and five-show combinations, with an add-on option for ThePianoGuys, four dads whose mix of piano, cello and multimedia has sparked a YouTube explosion.
Here's the lineup:
l An Evening with ThePianoGuys: 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22. Hailing from Utah, ThePianoGuys are four dads who became an Internet sensation by way of their self-made music videos. They've made more than 50 since early 2011, including their hit video of their version of One Direction's 'What Makes You Beautiful,' and a reinvention of 'Let It Go' from Disney's 'Frozen.'
l 'Elf The Musical': 6:30 p.m. Nov. 28. Based on the now-classic holiday movie, the play tells the tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa's bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy's enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa's permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas.
l Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy: 7:30 p.m. Jan. 17. Nature's unpredictable creations are brought to life by an international cast of aerialists, contortionists, acrobats, jugglers and musicians. From the Butterfly Ballet and Flipping Monkeys to Hopping Frogs and Stretching Lizards, it's a world-class explosion of imagination, athleticism and Broadway theatrics for all ages.
l '42nd Street': 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15. This backstage musical comedy is a song-and dance-fable of Broadway, with an American Dream story. Based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, '42nd Street' tells the story of starry-eyed young dancer Peggy Sawyer, who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical 'Pretty Lady.' When the star breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star. Memorable songs include 'We're In The Money,' 'Lullaby of Broadway,' 'Shuffle Off to Buffalo,' 'I Only Have Eyes For You' and of course, the title song.
l 'Menopause The Musical': 8 p.m. April 29. Four women at a lingerie sale have nothing in common but a black lace bra and memory loss, hot flashes, night sweats, not enough sex, too much sex and more. This musical parody is set to classic tunes from the 1960s, '70s and '80s. A portion of ticket sales from this 'Survivor Tour' will benefit Susan G. Komen, a worldwide network devoted to breast cancer education, research, advocacy, health services and social support programs.
l 'Rent' 20th Anniversary Tour: 7:30 p.m. May 16. Two decades after taking Broadway by storm, Jonathan Larson's 'Rent' continues to speak loudly and defiantly to audiences across generations around the world. The Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning masterpiece is returning to the stage in a 20th anniversary touring production. A re-imagining of Puccini's 'La Boheme,' 'Rent' follows a year in the lives of seven artists struggling to follow their dreams without selling out. With its message of joy and hope in the face of fear, this celebration of friendship and creativity reminds audiences to measure their lives with love.
